Chapter 8 - The Severed Connection

The heavy thud of the deadbolts locking from the outside reverberated through the metal frame of the server room door, sealing the exit with finality. Maya dropped her hands from the keyboard, stepping back from the console as the screen went completely dark, the last remnant of light fading into a dead, gray slate.

“He locked us in,” Sarah whispered, her voice dropping to a terrified breath. She rushed to the door, slamming her palms against the steel surface and pulling frantically at the handle, but it remained completely rigid. “The handle won't turn. Leo, do something! You said you knew how this system worked!”

“I didn't know he had administrative override tokens,” Leo protested, his voice cracking as he backed away from the terminal desk. He stared down the dark aisle where Bryce had been standing moments earlier, but the space was now empty, casting only deep, unyielding shadows under the glow of their phones.

“Tokens?” Maya spun around, her eyes flashing with sudden fury in the dim light. “You knew Bryce had administrative tokens, and you didn't think to mention that before we broke into the mainframe?”

“He only had them because the district IT director gave them to him for the hardware audit last semester!” Leo defended himself loudly, stepping forward to meet her gaze. “How was I supposed to know he kept his master key active after he transferred?”

“Because you two were splitting the security codes behind everyone’s backs to hack the district grade database last term!” Marcus shouted, stepping between them, his phone light illuminating the angry tension carved into his face. “Don't act like you were innocent victims in this, Leo. You both built this entire mess.”

“Shut up, Marcus,” Maya hissed, holding her hand up to demand silence. She strained her ears, ignoring the bickering between the boys as she focused on the faint sounds echoing through the metal floor grates beneath their feet.

Clack. Clack. Thump.

The rhythmic metallic scraping was back, moving much faster now, coming directly up the vertical maintenance shaft toward the floor grate in the center of the room. It wasn't just one person moving through the tunnels anymore; the acoustic resonance suggested multiple heavy boots sliding across the concrete conduits below.

“He’s not alone,” Maya whispered, her blood running cold.

“What do you mean, he’s not alone?” Sarah whimpered, backing away from the center of the room until her back hit the cold metal casing of rack two. “Who else could be down there?”

“The district security audit team,” Leo said, his eyes widening in sudden, absolute terror as the implications finally hit him. “Bryce didn't hack the system alone. He reported our unauthorized IP address to the district overnight. They’ve been tracking this session since the moment I badged into the hallway.”

Before anyone could respond, the heavy steel floor grate in the center of the room lifted three inches with a sharp, metallic screech, and a blinding beam of white tactical light shot upward from the dark abyss below, cutting straight through the dusty air of the server room.
