Chapter 12 - The Principal's Accomplice

The high-definition feed on the terminal screen rendered Principal Harrison’s face in stark, unflinching clarity. The graying hair, the expensive tailored suit, and the calm, authoritative expression stood in sharp contrast to the chaotic panic filling the server room. He stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Bryce in the empty hallway, watching the ninety-nine percent progress bar tick upward with agonizing slowness.
“Principal Harrison?” Sarah breathed, her phone slipping slightly from her trembling hand as she stared at the screen. “Why is the principal down here with Bryce? He’s supposed to be at the district board dinner tonight.”
“He was never at the board dinner,” Maya said, her voice shaking with a mixture of betrayal and cold realization as she watched the screen. “The whole hardware upgrade project, the cybersecurity grants, the student tech showcases—it was all a front to clear the district’s legacy database before the state audit next month.”
“They needed someone to take the fall for the missing financial records,” Leo added, staring at the screen with wide eyes, the last pieces of the puzzle snapping painfully into place in his mind. “If the state auditor discovered the budget deficit in the tech department, Harrison would lose his job and face federal fraud charges. So he used our unauthorized coding prank as cover to wipe the local drives and blame it on student negligence.”
“And Bryce helped him set it up in exchange for an early graduation waiver and a full-ride scholarship to the state tech institute,” Marcus concluded bitterly, recording the entire terminal display on his smartphone cloud stream.
On the screen, Principal Harrison reached out and tapped the admin tablet in Bryce’s hand, instantly pushing the progress bar from ninety-nine to one hundred percent.
A sharp, synthetic chime rang out from the server room terminal. The screen flashed green for a fraction of a second before displaying a stark, final message: DATA TRANSFER COMPLETE. LOCAL DRIVE FORMATTING INITIATED.
“No, no, no!” Leo lunged forward, slamming his hands onto the keyboard. “The local drive has the raw access logs! If it formats, all proof of the principal’s involvement disappears forever!”
“Is there a physical backup?” Maya asked quickly, her eyes scanning the complex array of ports beneath the desk.
“Only the physical hard drive module housed in the main rack behind us,” Leo said, pointing frantically toward the towering metal cabinet in the center of the room. “The one with the biometric security lock.”
Before anyone could move toward the rack, the heavy steel door at the front of the hallway shuddered violently. The automated deadbolts retracted with a loud metallic snap, and the door swung slowly inward, revealing the empty, brightly lit corridor beyond.

Standing in the doorway, alone in the center of the threshold, was Principal Harrison. He didn't look like a corrupt administrator caught in the act; he looked entirely composed, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses as he stepped calmly into the server room.
