Chapter 14 - The Override Sequence

The heavy internal tumblers of the main server rack ground together with a sharp, metallic screech that echoed off the concrete walls. Principal Harrison took a quick step forward, his calm demeanor finally cracking for a fraction of a second as he reached out to grab Maya’s arm.
“Stop her!” Harrison barked, his voice losing its professional smoothness.
Before Harrison’s fingers could graze Maya’s jacket, Marcus lunged sideways, throwing his full weight directly into the principal’s path and knocking him off balance against the edge of the terminal desk.
“Run!” Marcus yelled, struggling to keep a grip on Harrison’s suit lapels as the principal shoved him back with surprising force.
Leo didn't hesitate. He grabbed Maya’s hand, and together they threw their weight against the heavy side panel of the central server rack, which gave way with a resounding pop, releasing a large, sealed physical backup drive wrapped in thick braided cables.
“I’ve got the physical drive!” Leo shouted, pulling the heavy black module free from its dock just as the terminal screen flashed a blinding, pulsating yellow.
The automated fire suppression system overhead whined loudly, kicking back into action as the room’s internal temperature sensors registered the forced hardware disconnect. A low hiss filled the air as invisible nitrogen gas began to bleed from the ceiling vents, instantly dropping the oxygen levels in the room and filling their noses with a sharp, metallic tang.
“The nitrogen purge!” Sarah screamed, coughing as she stumbled backward toward the open hallway door. “We have to get out of here right now!”
Principal Harrison managed to break free from Marcus’s grip, stumbling back toward the doorway with a furious look in his eyes. He slammed his hand against the wall-mounted emergency lockdown button, trying to re-engage the steel deadbolts before they could escape into the corridor.
“You’re not leaving with that drive,” Harrison snarled, his voice echoing sharply as he blocked the threshold, his hand hovering over the secondary pneumatic seal switch.
“Move, Harrison!” Maya yelled, her voice cutting through the hiss of the escaping gas. She didn't hesitate; she lifted the heavy physical backup module high in her hands and hurled it straight toward the open hallway floor, shattering the glass fire alarm box mounted beside the door.
The moment the glass shattered, the entire building’s emergency electrical system tripped automatically. The security jammers whined and died. The hallway lights flashed from harsh white to a brilliant, steady emergency amber, and across the entire school district, the main public address system kicked on with a loud, ringing chime.

And then, through the open doorway, the unmistakable sound of distant police sirens began to echo clearly up from the main access road, growing louder with every passing second.
