Chapter 10 - The Encrypted Trap

The glowing blue lines of the holographic data window hovered in the chilled air of the server room, casting an eerie, synthetic light across the tactical officer’s matte-black helmet. Maya stared at the alphanumeric string floating at the top of the display, her mind refusing to process what she was reading.

“That’s impossible,” Maya whispered, stepping forward until she was only inches away from the floating projection. “I never generated that encryption key. My student ID hasn’t had root administrative clearance since my internship ended last semester.”

“Your credentials were used to bypass the final firewall layer at exactly 8:14 PM,” the tactical officer stated, his voice devoid of any emotion as he tapped the holographic display, expanding a secondary file containing a detailed access log. “The system signature matches your personal biometric login token, registered to your school-issued tablet.”

“Someone cloned my token,” Maya said, her gaze darting frantically from the screen to the dark opening of the service tunnel where Bryce had vanished moments earlier. “Leo’s lab partner, Bryce—he had access to my desk while we were working on the district coding project last week. He could have easily copied the digital signature from my hardware cache.”

“That’s a serious accusation,” the officer replied, his hand resting casually on the utility belt near his data wand. “Do you have physical proof of this alleged data theft, or is this just an attempt to shift blame away from your own terminal activity?”

“Check the physical security logs for the library media lab on Tuesday afternoon,” Leo chimed in quickly, stepping up beside Maya. The defensive posture he usually wore was completely gone, replaced by genuine panic. “Bryce signed into terminal four using my guest pass while I was out of the room. He had a custom flash drive plugged directly into the motherboard for over twenty minutes.”

The officer didn't answer immediately. He tapped his helmet comms again, issuing a brief command to the remote database unit stationed in the district administration building. A few tense seconds ticked by in heavy silence, broken only by the rhythmic hum of the failing server cooling racks.

“Lab four logs confirmed,” the officer’s external speaker crackled with a synthesized voice coming through his shoulder radio. “An unauthorized script was executed on terminal four at 3:42 PM on Tuesday. The device signature matches the secondary storage node currently linked to the server room mainframe.”

Maya let out a shaky breath she didn't realize she was holding. She turned her head to look at Leo, seeing a flicker of shared understanding pass between them for the first time all evening.

“See?” Marcus urged, stepping closer with his smartphone still recording every word. “They were framing us the entire time. It was a setup by the district’s own internal security team to test the new firmware vulnerability.”

“Not the district team,” Maya corrected softly, her eyes narrowing as she looked back at the tactical officer. She pointed at the emblem stitched onto the shoulder of the officer’s Kevlar vest—a subtle, dark gray patch featuring a stylized wolf head with a glowing digital circuit eye. “That’s not school security. That’s Apex Cyber-Defense. A private security contractor hired by the school board last month.”

The officer slowly lowered his visor, revealing a scarred, weathered face with cold gray eyes that surveyed the four teenagers with sudden, calculating intensity.

“You’re smarter than you look, kid,” the officer said, his tone shifting from professional detachment to something far more dangerous. He reached to his belt and unclipped a heavy steel key ring, tossing it casually onto the terminal desk. “Too bad you figured it out ten minutes too late.”

Before anyone could move, the heavy steel door at the front of the hallway clicked loudly, and the entire room was plunged into total darkness as the remaining emergency lights were remotely cut off at the main breaker.
