Chapter 1 - The Cold Room Challenge

The hum of the server room ventilation system filled the chilled hallway, vibrating faintly through the soles of Leo’s sneakers. He stood close to the reinforced steel door, the heavy wool of his letterman jacket stiff against his shoulders, the bright yellow letter 'N' stitched on the chest catching the harsh fluorescent light above. Maya remained frozen beside the security badge scanner, her fingers hovering inches from the polished metal reader. Her grey hoodie swallowed her shoulders, and her dark hair fell in sharp strands across her forehead.

“Time for the cold room challenge,” Leo said, a mischievous grin stretching across his face as he leaned closer to her ear. “Let's see you hack out of this.”

Maya didn’t smile. Her breath hitched in the dry air of the corridor. She turned her head slightly, her eyes narrowing as she glared at him.

“This isn't funny, Leo,” Maya snapped, her voice dropping an octave as she pulled her hand back from the scanner. “You know my dad’s account is tied to this terminal. If security flags an unauthorized ping, it goes straight to the district admin.”

“Relax, it’s just a prank for the school tech showcase,” Leo replied, his tone shifting from playful to defensive as he shoved his hands into his pockets. “Nobody is going to check the logs on a Saturday night. I manually overrode the mainframe an hour ago.”

“You did what?” Maya stepped back, her jaw tightening in disbelief. “You hacked the mainframe without telling me? You used my credentials?”

“I needed a master pass to get the doors to cycle,” Leo muttered, glancing nervously down the hall.

Through the open server room door, two of their classmates, Sarah and Marcus, stood bathed in the blue glow of long rows of server racks, laughing loudly while holding their smartphones high to capture every second of the confrontation.

“Cut the crap, Leo,” Maya said, her voice shaking with sudden fury. “You lied to get me here. This isn't a challenge; it's a setup.”

“Just play along for two minutes,” Leo hissed, grabbing her forearm.

Maya violently shook his hand off, pointing a trembling finger at the digital timer mounted above the door, which was currently glowing in neon red numbers, counting backward from thirty minutes.

“Wait,” Maya whispered, her eyes darting from the timer to the ceiling-mounted security monitor that displayed multiple live camera feeds of the hallway. “Is that Bryce?”
