Chapter 9

As Emily delved deeper into the administrative logs of the estate, she began to realize that Victoria’s attempted framing was not an isolated incident of desperation. It was merely the tip of a much larger, more insidious iceberg. Buried deep within the encrypted financial archives of the Sterling family holdings were dozens of suspicious transactions, unaccounted-for asset liquidations, and mysterious offshore shell companies receiving regular payouts from the estate's main accounts.

Late one night, the security annex was quiet save for the rhythmic clicking of keyboards. Emily sat at the secondary terminal, cross-referencing visitor logs from the past two years with the financial wire transfers. Julian stood behind her, leaning over her shoulder to inspect a complex web of data nodes displayed on the monitor.

“Look at this pattern,” Emily said, pointing a slender finger at a series of transactions occurring every three months. “Whenever a high-value piece of jewelry or artwork goes missing or is reported stolen for insurance claims, a corresponding wire transfer is sent to a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands.”

“That’s standard insurance fraud,” Julian murmured, frowning as he traced the digital trail. “Victoria wasn’t acting alone in her debts. She was being supplied with targets by an outside broker.”

“And look who authorized the legal waivers for every single one of those insurance claims,” Emily continued, scrolling down to the signature line of a digitally archived document. Her finger stopped on a name that made the air in the room feel suddenly freezing.

The name on the authorization form wasn't Victoria. It belonged to Marcus Vance, the family’s longtime legal counsel and managing trustee of the Sterling estate holdings.

Julian straightened up immediately, his expression darkening into a hard, dangerous mask. “Vance. Of course. The man who drafted the trusts, managed the insurance policies, and handled all of Victoria’s personal accounts.”

“He didn’t just help her cover her debts,” Emily realized, her voice dropping to a tense whisper. “He engineered the entire financial collapse of the estate from the inside out, using Victoria as a pawn to drain the family’s liquid assets while pinning the blame on external factors—or better yet, on disposable household staff.”

“If Vance is involved, this goes way beyond simple family drama,” Julian said, walking over to the secure comms panel to lock the room’s external access doors. “He has deep ties to local magistrates, corporate board members, and private security contractors. If we move against him without undeniable proof, he will spin this narrative and have us both locked away before dawn.”

Emily stood up from the terminal, her dark eyes flashing with a cold, resolute fire. The fear that had once defined her place in this mansion was entirely gone, burned away by the harsh light of truth. “Then we don't just gather proof, Julian. We build a trap so airtight that even Vance’s expensive lawyers won't find a way out.”
