Chapter 2

The smart screen flickered, casting a cool blue light across Julian’s chiseled features. The interface displayed a high-resolution grid of security feeds, capturing every corner of the sprawling mansion’s service quarters. Julian’s fingers moved across the glass with calculated speed, swiping past hallways, kitchens, and entry points until he reached the restricted auxiliary storage locker room in the basement.
The image on the screen sharpened. The timestamp in the corner read two hours earlier, long before the guests had arrived for the annual charity gala. On the display, Victoria stood near a row of steel lockers, her black dress unmistakable against the institutional gray walls. In her hands, she held the exact same brown leather bag that now sat open on the wooden staircase.
Julian’s jaw tightened. He did not call out or interrupt the tension in the foyer. Instead, he simply watched the silent digital ghost tell the story Victoria had worked so hard to bury. On the screen, Victoria glanced over her shoulder twice, ensuring the corridor was empty, before unzipping the bag and dropping the velvet pouch containing the diamond inside. She had planted the evidence herself, using a duplicate set of master keys that only senior family members and administrative staff possessed.
Back on the staircase, the silence grew deafening. Emily remained frozen, her knees aching against the unyielding wood, tears welling in her eyes but refusing to spill over. She looked up at Victoria, whose confident posture had begun to stiffen slightly as she noticed Julian’s extended silence near the control panel.
“Julian,” Victoria called out, her voice losing a fraction of its icy composure. “Stop playing with the monitors and call the authorities. We have a thief right here.”
Julian did not answer immediately. He stepped away from the wall-mounted screen, his leather-soled shoes clicking softly against the marble floor of the foyer. Two junior security officers in sharp suits stepped out from the corridor behind him, their expressions neutral, awaiting instructions. Julian raised a hand, gesturing for them to hold their position as he walked slowly toward the staircase where Emily knelt in distress.

The air in the grand hall grew thick with anticipation. The other household staff had gathered near the edges of the room, whispering behind cupped hands, watching their colleague face a nightmare that could easily become their own. In a house as wealthy as the Sterlings, the help were often invisible until something went wrong, at which point they became the default scapegoats for the elite's private failures.
Julian stopped just a few feet away from Emily. He looked down at the open bag, then up at Victoria, who was now gripping the wooden handrail so tightly her knuckles had turned ghostly white. The dynamic in the room was shifting, and the architects of the setup were beginning to realize their foundation was cracking.
