Chapter 6

Morning sunlight filtered through the leaded glass windows of the Sterling estate, casting long, geometric shadows across the polished floors of the main salon. The frantic energy of the charity gala had been replaced by a heavy, suffocating stillness. The police had arrived around midnight, conducting a thorough sweep of the premises, interviewing staff, and downloading the master security logs that Julian had so meticulously prepared.

Emily stood by the large service kitchen counter, preparing her first pot of coffee for the day. Her movements were practiced and calm, though the events of the previous night echoed in the back of her mind like a distant storm. The other staff members treated her with a strange mix of awe and hesitation. To them, Emily was no longer just the quiet girl who cleaned the west wing; she was the survivor of a high-society conspiracy who had stared down the mistress of the house and won.

The swinging door pushed open, and Mr. Sterling walked into the kitchen. He looked older than his fifty years, the lines around his eyes etched deep with exhaustion and profound humiliation. The patriarch of the estate had spent the entire night answering questions from detectives and legal counsel, trying to untangle the financial mess his wife had left behind.

“Emily,” Mr. Sterling said, his voice raspy and subdued. He stopped near the center of the island, leaning slightly against the marble counter.

Emily turned immediately, wiping her hands on her apron and dipping her head in polite deference out of habit, though Mr. Sterling raised a hand to stop her.

“Please, no formalities this morning,” he murmured, running a hand through his thinning gray hair. “I came down here to… to say I am sorry. Words feel inadequate, I know. But what happened under this roof is completely unacceptable.”

“Thank you, sir,” Emily replied simply. She did not offer false forgiveness or empty platitudes. Her survival depended on boundaries, and she had no intention of letting the wealthy owner off the hook with a quick apology.

“Victoria has been transferred to a private holding facility downtown pending formal arraignment,” Mr. Sterling continued, his eyes fixed on the grain of the marble. “Her legal team is already trying to distance her actions from the family trust, but the reality is that our name is ruined, and more importantly, an innocent person’s life was nearly destroyed because of reckless greed.”

“I just want to do my job, Mr. Sterling,” Emily said quietly. “Or rather, I want to know if I still have one.”

“Of course you do,” he said quickly, looking up at her with genuine sincerity. “In fact, Julian has suggested restructuring the entire security and administrative protocols of the estate. He believes—and I agree—that someone with your integrity and observation skills would be invaluable in a newly created liaison role between household staff and administration.”

Emily blinked in surprise. The offer came completely out of left field, disrupting the predictable trajectory of her quiet, invisible life in the west wing.
