Chapter 10

The following morning, the Sterling estate appeared serene under a blanket of gray autumn fog. Inside the executive study, however, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Marcus Vance sat comfortably in a leather armchair behind the massive mahogany desk, tapping a silver fountain pen against the blotter. He was a man in his late fifties, impeccably groomed, with silver-streaked hair and an expression of perpetual, patronizing amusement.
Mr. Sterling sat opposite him, looking increasingly uneasy as Vance reviewed a thick stack of legal documents.
“I’m simply telling you, Arthur, that restructuring the estate in light of Victoria’s unfortunate legal troubles requires immediate liquidation of the secondary assets,” Vance said smoothly, his voice carrying the practiced cadence of a corporate shark. “If we don't sell the west wing properties and transfer the remaining trust funds to a consolidated holding account, your creditors will tear this estate apart piece by piece.”
Before Mr. Sterling could reply, the heavy wooden double doors of the study swung open with a soft, deliberate click.
Julian walked into the room, his posture rigid and commanding. Right behind him walked Emily, dressed not in her former maid uniform, but in a tailored charcoal business suit that mirrored the professionalism of the estate's highest administrators.
Vance paused his pen-tapping, his eyes narrowing as he looked at Emily. A flicker of genuine contempt crossed his features. “What is the domestic staff doing in the executive study? Arthur, I thought we agreed this meeting was strictly confidential.”
“Emily is no longer part of the domestic staff, Marcus,” Mr. Sterling said, clearing his throat as he straightened up in his chair. “She is now the Director of Internal Administrative Security.”
Vance let out a dry, condescending laugh. “A maid promoted to security? Have you lost your mind entirely, Arthur? The stress of these past weeks is clearly clouding your judgment.”
“My judgment has never been clearer, Mr. Vance,” Emily spoke up for the first time. Her voice was calm, clear, and devoid of any hesitation. She stepped forward, placing a sleek leather folder directly onto the mahogany desk, right beside Vance’s silver pen.
Vance looked down at the folder, then up at Emily, his smile fading into a cool, defensive mask. “And what is this supposed to be?”
May you like
“It’s a comprehensive audit of every missing asset, fraudulent insurance claim, and unauthorized wire transfer executed through the estate’s primary accounts over the last thirty-six months,” Julian stated, walking up to stand beside Emily. “Complete with IP addresses, digital signatures, and notarized banking logs pointing directly to a Cayman Islands shell corporation managed under your private legal retainer.”
Vance’s hand froze over the desk. For the first time, the polished veneer of corporate invincibility cracked, revealing a flash of genuine panic in his eyes. He recovered quickly, leaning back in his chair with a calculated smirk. “This is absurd. Fabricated data, malicious slander. I am the legal counsel for this family, and I will have you both prosecuted for corporate espionage and defamation before the sun sets.”
