Chapter 4

The mention of financial indiscretions silenced the murmurs of the gathered staff. The Sterling name was synonymous with untouchable wealth, but those who worked closest to the family knew the whispered rumors of mounting debts, failed offshore investments, and a lifestyle sustained entirely by liquidating family heirlooms behind closed doors.

Emily stood back, her hands clasped tightly in front of her apron. The shock was slowly giving way to a profound, burning anger. She had spent years enduring condescending remarks, impossible cleaning standards, and endless suspicion, all while maintaining her dignity. To realize that she had been chosen as a human shield for criminal desperation made her blood run cold.

“You wanted the insurance payout,” Julian stated, walking slowly toward the base of the stairs where Victoria stood trapped between the security guards. “The estate’s policies dictate that if a high-value item is stolen by an employee and unrecovered, the family collects the full insured value within thirty days. A clever way to settle a seven-figure gambling debt with private creditors.”

Victoria’s lower lip trembled, though whether from fury or fear was impossible to tell. “You can’t prove intent. Even if I moved the stone, I changed my mind. I was bringing it back.”

“The footage shows you placing it directly into Emily’s unpacked luggage, Victoria,” Julian countered smoothly. “That isn't a change of heart. That is a premeditated framing. You selected Emily because she is quiet, works alone in the west wing, and has no influential family members to make noise if she gets locked away.”

The guards stepped up the stairs, flanking Victoria on either side. They did not touch her aggressively; their professionalism was absolute, which only made their presence more terrifying to her. The golden cage she had built for herself was locking from the outside.

“Take her to the secure holding suite on the lower level,” Julian instructed the officers. “Notify Mr. Sterling immediately, and preserve all digital logs for the local authorities. They are already on their way.”

As the guards escorted Victoria down the stairs, she passed right by Emily. She paused for a fraction of a second, her eyes blazing with a mixture of hatred and desperation. “You won’t win this, Emily,” she spat quietly. “People like you don’t survive in our world.”

Emily met her gaze without flinching. The fear that had paralyzed her minutes earlier was entirely gone, replaced by a quiet, unshakeable strength. “I don't live in your world, Victoria,” Emily said softly. “And I never wanted to.”
