Chapter 8

Julian Vance paced frantically back and forth across the plush carpet of his penthouse apartment. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the glittering city skyline, but the glittering lights brought him no comfort. His phone buzzed continuously, emitting a harsh, rhythmic tone that felt like a physical blow with every vibration. He snatched the device off the marble kitchen island and hurled it against the living room wall, shattering the screen into a spiderweb of dead pixels.

He was entirely alone. Elena had blocked his number after her independent counsel advised her to sever all ties with him. The board of directors had officially voted to strip him of his executive title and voting privileges. Worst of all, the court-appointed receiver had frozen his personal checking accounts, credit cards, and investment portfolios pending the outcome of the federal fraud investigation. He had two thousand dollars in cash hidden in a desk drawer—the pathetic remainder of his liquid assets.

A sharp knock echoed at his front door. Julian froze, his breath catching in his throat. He crept cautiously toward the entryway, peering through the small brass peephole. Two uniformed federal marshals stood in the hallway, accompanied by an officer of the court holding a thick stack of legal documents.

"Open the door, Mr. Vance," a stern, authoritative voice echoed through the heavy wood. "You are being served with a federal bench warrant and a mandatory asset seizure order issued by the Southern District Court."

Panic flared hot and blinding in Julian’s chest. He turned the deadbolt, his hands shaking uncontrollably as the heavy oak door swung inward. The marshals stepped past him with practiced efficiency, their expressions grim and uncompromising. One of them immediately placed cold steel cuffs around Julian’s wrists, tightening them with a sharp click.

"You have the right to remain silent," the lead marshal recited in a monotonous drone. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

Julian opened his mouth to protest, to demand his attorney, to scream about his rights, but the words caught in his dry throat. As they marched him out of the penthouse and down the private elevator toward the underground parking garage, Julian caught a glimpse of his reflection in the mirrored lobby walls. The sharp, arrogant executive in the expensive green suit was gone, replaced by a desperate, sweating man in handcuffs facing a very long, very lonely prison sentence. The house of cards he had built on deceit and exploitation had finally collapsed, crushing him beneath its weight.
