Chapter 3

Morning sunlight filtered through the tinted floor-to-ceiling windows of the Vance Technologies executive boardroom on the fortieth floor. The room smelled of expensive espresso and suppressed panic. Julian sat at the head of the polished mahogany table, his green suit looking slightly rumpled, as if he had spent the entire night pacing his luxury penthouse. Opposite him sat Marcus Vance, an imposing man in his late sixties with silver hair and eyes like polished steel. Between them lay a printed copy of Clara’s legal notification, the crisp pages vibrating under the tension in the room.
"Care to explain why I received an emergency injunction request from David Chen at four o'clock this morning, Julian?" Marcus’s voice was dangerously low, lacking any warmth. "The filing claims you attempted to execute a hostile internal transfer of core intellectual property without board authorization."
Julian swallowed hard, his fingers nervously smoothing down his brown tie. "It’s a malicious fabrication, Uncle Marcus. Clara Hayes... she’s bitter. We had a personal disagreement, and now she’s weaponizing her former administrative access to sabotage the upcoming merger. She hacked the server out of jealousy."
Elena, standing near the corner by the projection screen in her red dress, offered a tight, supportive nod. "I can verify that, Mr. Vance. Miss Hayes frequently overstepped her operational boundaries. We have documented several instances of erratic behavior."
Before Marcus could respond, the heavy oak boardroom doors swung open. Clara walked in, wearing a sharp charcoal-gray pantsuit and a crisp white blouse. Her posture was impeccable, radiating quiet authority. She carried a slim leather folio, placing it gracefully on the table directly opposite Julian. She did not glance at Elena, nor did she acknowledge Julian’s pale, trembling expression. She took a seat next to Marcus, who offered her a respectful, albeit cautious, nod of acknowledgment.

"Jealousy is a poor defense for corporate fraud, Julian," Clara said evenly, her voice cutting through the heavy air of the room. She opened her folio and slid three notarized financial statements across the mahogany surface toward Marcus. "These documents detail the systematic funneling of research and development funds into a Cayman Islands account held under the pseudonym Aegis Holdings. Furthermore, Julian’s signature appears on every single transaction, countersigned by corporate counsel—counsel that was never approved by this board."
Julian surged to his feet, knocking his heavy leather chair backward with a sharp crash. "You lying witch! You planted those files!" His face flushed a dark, mottled crimson as he pointed a trembling finger directly at Clara. The veneer of corporate calm completely shattered under the weight of incontrovertible proof. Marcus simply raised a single hand, signaling for corporate security to stand by at the doorway, making it abundantly clear whose authority truly ruled the room.
