Chapter 7

The quiet hum of the downtown cafe offered a stark contrast to the corporate chaos raging downtown. Clara sat in a corner booth near the window, sipping a hot cup of green tea. The gentle patter of rain against the glass created a soothing acoustic barrier against the outside world. Her laptop lay open before her, displaying lines of clean, elegant code—her own intellectual property, completely isolated and secured away from the compromised servers of her former company.
The bell above the cafe door chimed softly, and David Chen walked in, scanning the room before spotting her and sliding into the vinyl booth opposite her. He placed a thick legal folder on the table.
"Marcus Vance called me twenty minutes ago," David said, a faint smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Apex Global wants to bypass Julian entirely. They want to restructure the acquisition deal with you as the primary technical partner and majority stakeholder of the core algorithm patents."
Clara took a slow sip of her tea, her expression remarkably calm. "I expected as much. Julian never understood that ownership requires stewardship, not just a title. He thought his green suit and corner office made him untouchable."
"Well, he’s currently very touchable," David chuckled dryly, opening the folder. "The district attorney’s office has formally accepted our evidentiary packet regarding the offshore wire fraud. They’re preparing a grand jury subpoena. Julian’s personal accounts have been frozen under court order, and Elena has already retained separate counsel, desperately trying to cut a deal by pinning the entire document-forgery scheme directly on Julian."
"Let them tear each other apart," Clara said softly, her gaze drifting back to the rainy street outside. "I don't want vengeance, David. I just want what was always mine, legally protected and free from interference so I can build something that actually helps people instead of feeding corporate egos."
May you like
"You have it," David replied, reaching across the table to give her hand a reassuring squeeze. "The court will ratify the equity transfer by tomorrow afternoon. You’ll hold fifty-one percent of the restructured corporation. Julian will be left with mounting legal fees, a tarnished reputation, and nothing to show for his betrayal except an expensive green suit."
Clara nodded slowly. The heavy emotional burden she had carried for months finally lifted completely off her shoulders. She closed her laptop, packed her things, and stepped out into the crisp afternoon air, feeling lighter and freer than she had in years.
