Chapter 8 - The Footsteps on the Stairs

The heavy, rhythmic sound of footsteps ascending the grand staircase froze everyone in the hallway. Julian lowered his hand from his suit jacket, his sharp gaze shifting from Eleanor and Clara toward the arched entryway. The dim lighting cast long, distorted shadows across the mahogany banister as the footsteps drew closer, heavy and unhurried.

“That’s him,” Julian said quietly, his voice carrying an unsettling note of finality. “Dr. Hayes is here.”

Eleanor tightened her grip around Clara, who was now shivering violently, her breathing turning shallow as the premature labor entered a critical phase. The cut on Clara’s forehead continued to bleed slowly, contrasting sharply with her pale skin.

“I don't care who it is,” Eleanor hissed, glaring at her husband. “If he is your associate, he is not touching this girl in my house without an ambulance crew present. We are calling the authorities the second anyone steps foot into this corridor.”

Julian let out a cold, humorless chuckle, shaking his head slowly.

“Authorities, Eleanor? You still don't understand the world we live in,” Julian replied, stepping toward the archway to greet the newcomer. “Dr. Hayes doesn't answer to the medical board. He answers to people who make problems like this disappear permanently.”

A tall, middle-aged man in a dark trench coat stepped into the warm light of the hallway. Dr. Hayes carried a heavy black medical case in one hand, his face expressionless behind wire-rimmed glasses. He looked down at Clara sprawled on the floor, then at Eleanor in her ruined red dress, before casting a knowing, clinical glance toward Julian.

“Looks like we have an emergency, Mr. Vance,” Dr. Hayes said in a flat, monotone voice, his English accent clipped and formal. “The child is coming early, I assume? And the mother is experiencing severe trauma.”

“Get away from her!” Eleanor yelled, trying to position herself more firmly in front of Clara, but Dr. Hayes simply walked past her with practiced indifference, setting his black case down on the Persian rug next to them.

“Now, Mrs. Vance, let us not be dramatic,” Dr. Hayes instructed coldly, opening the metal clasps of his case to reveal an array of specialized medical instruments that looked more suited for a surgical suite than an emergency birth. “Your husband called me because this situation requires absolute discretion. If this girl gives birth in a public hospital, the legal ramifications for your family name will be catastrophic.”

Clara let out a muffled scream, her fingernails digging deep into Eleanor’s arm as another agonizing wave hit her.

“Please... Mrs. Vance... don't let him give me that injection,” Clara sobbed, her eyes wide with sheer terror as Dr. Hayes pulled a syringe filled with a clear amber liquid from the case. “That’s not for delivery... that’s a sedative to make me forget what I saw on the flash drive!”

Eleanor slapped the syringe right out of Dr. Hayes’s hand before he could administer it, sending the glass tube shattering across the marble floor.

“Touch her again, and I swear I’ll shoot you both,” a deep, gravelly voice echoed from the end of the hallway, stopping everyone in their tracks.
