Chapter 10 - The Fallen Chandelier

The deafening echo of the gunshot faded into a ringing silence, broken only by Clara’s agonizing groans and the heavy breathing of the men in the hallway. Shards of crystal from the shattered chandelier littered the floor, glittering dangerously under the remaining wall sconces. Marcus fell to his knees, clutching his bruised arm where Dr. Hayes had struck him, glaring up at Julian with pure hatred.

Julian didn't hesitate. He stepped over the glittering glass, picked up the fallen revolver from the floor with practiced ease, and aimed it squarely at Marcus’s head.

“It’s over, Marcus,” Julian said coldly, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. “You should have stayed in Europe like I told you to.”

Eleanor scrambled backward, dragging Clara slightly away from the dangerous debris as blood from Clara’s forehead mixed with the dust on the floor.

“Julian, stop!” Eleanor screamed, throwing herself between her husband and her brother, her red dress torn at the hem. “If you shoot him, you are no better than an executioner! My family is completely destroyed, and you did this to every single one of us!”

Julian’s eyes flicked to his wife, a cold flash of hesitation crossing his features for a fraction of a second. But before he could pull the trigger or lower the weapon, Clara let out a piercing, gut-wrenching scream that drowned out all other sound. Her body arched sharply off the floor as the final stage of labor crested violently.

“Mrs. Vance... I can’t... the baby is coming right now!” Clara sobbed, her fingers digging desperately into Eleanor’s arm.

Dr. Hayes stepped over the glass shards, ignoring Marcus completely as he knelt down beside Clara with his medical case, his clinical detachment returning instantly.

“Move aside, Eleanor,” Dr. Hayes instructed firmly, opening a fresh surgical pack. “Whether you like me or not, that child will not survive another ten minutes without intervention. If you want her and the baby to live, you will let me do my job.”

Eleanor looked down at Clara, whose face was pale, tear-stained, and drenched in sweat. The bruises on her forehead stood out like a badge of the brutal world she had been trapped in. Eleanor looked up at Julian, who still held the gun pointed at Marcus, standing like a dark lord guarding a crumbling empire.

“Do it,” Eleanor whispered to Dr. Hayes, her voice dead and hollow. Then she turned her blazing eyes back to her husband. “And when this is over, Julian, I promise you that every secret you buried will be dug up by the federal marshals waiting outside.”

Julian’s finger tightened on the trigger as the heavy front security gates downstairs suddenly began to blare a deafening, automated alarm siren.
