Chapter 4 - The Voice in the Dark

The heavy oak door of the private study swung open, revealing a room shrouded in shadows as the afternoon sun dipped below the horizon. Eleanor walked in first, her elegant red dress brushing against the dark wood framing the entrance, her heart hammering against her ribs. Julian followed close behind, his dark suit blending into the dim lighting of the room. Clara remained standing just outside the threshold, rubbing her bruised arm and fighting the dizziness that threatened to pull her under.
Julian walked over to his heavy mahogany desk, his hand hovering over the sleek intercom system built into the wood paneling. Without turning on the main overhead lights, he pressed a button. A tiny red indicator light blinked to life, casting an eerie glow across the papers scattered on the desk.
“You want the truth, Eleanor?” Julian asked, his voice disturbingly calm as he picked up his encrypted smartphone. “Here is the truth about our wonderful family, straight from the mouth of your beloved brother.”
Julian tapped the screen, and a recorded voice crackled through the small speaker, echoing loudly in the quiet study.
“Julian, if you don't sign over the north wing by midnight, I’m telling Eleanor about the girl,” Marcus’s voice rasped through the speaker, unmistakably clear and dripping with arrogance. “She thinks her precious maid is just an innocent employee. She has no idea you knocked up Clara three months ago, and that you're paying her hush money to keep quiet in the quarters.”
The recording clicked off, leaving behind a silence so absolute it felt suffocating. Eleanor stopped dead in her tracks. The dazzling diamonds around her neck felt suddenly heavy, like a lead weight pressing down on her collarbone. She slowly turned around to face her husband, her face completely drained of color, her eyes wide with a devastation that cut deeper than any anger she had felt all day.
“Is it true?” Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling violently as a single tear finally escaped her eye, tracking slowly down her painted cheek. “Julian... look me in the eye and tell me that is a lie.”
Julian didn’t flinch. He placed the phone gently down on the polished wood, his expression unreadable.
“Marcus is a desperate gambler, Eleanor,” Julian said smoothly, stepping toward her with his hands open in a placating gesture. “He will say anything, fabricate any recording, to get his hands on your inheritance. You cannot let a lie from my blackmailing brother destroy what we have built together.”
From the doorway, Clara leaned heavily against the frame, her face pale and damp with nervous sweat. She looked at Julian with pure disgust, knowing that the man standing before her was a master of deception.
“He’s lying, Mrs. Vance,” Clara spoke up, her voice steady despite her fear. “The DNA test results from the private clinic are in the bottom locked drawer of that desk right now. Mr. Vance ordered them last week to verify the paternity before plotting to get rid of me.”

Julian’s head whipped toward Clara, a flash of pure menace crossing his features as he lunged across the room toward the desk drawer, but Eleanor was faster, intercepting the brass key lying on the blotter and twisting it open herself.
