Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Study

Eleanor froze, the furious glare in her eyes momentarily replaced by a flicker of deep confusion as she stared at the diamond bracelet in her husband’s hand. The cold, glittering stones seemed to mock the tension choking the opulent hallway. Clara remained curled on the cold floor, her breath coming in ragged, painful gasps as she clutched her lower stomach, her bruised forehead throbbing in rhythm with her racing pulse.

“Julian, what is that?” Eleanor demanded, her voice dropping an octave as she took a cautious step away from the maid. “That bracelet was supposed to be in the private vault downtown. How did you get it? And why are you defending this girl after what she did?”

Julian did not answer immediately. He cast a long, unreadable glance down at Clara, whose tear-streaked face remained fixed on the floor in absolute terror. The silence in the hallway stretched thin, heavy with unspoken accusations and decades of carefully guarded family secrets. Julian knelt slowly, ignoring the expensive fabric of his dark suit, and extended a steady hand toward Clara.

“Stand up, Clara,” Julian instructed, his voice remarkably gentle compared to the storm brewing in Eleanor’s posture. “Tell her what else you found in the locked drawer behind my desk. Tell her the truth about who really emptied the safe last night.”

Clara hesitated, looking up at Julian with a mixture of fear and lingering doubt. She accepted his strong hand, letting him pull her up carefully while wincing as another wave of physical pain shot through her pregnant body. She smoothed her stained blue maid uniform with trembling fingers, her eyes darting nervously between the husband and wife who held her entire livelihood—and perhaps her safety—in their hands.

“I didn't steal anything, Mrs. Vance,” Clara spoke clearly, her voice trembling slightly but carrying a ring of undeniable sincerity. “Mr. Vance’s private study was unlocked when I went in to dust the mahogany shelves. The secret panel was open. The missing deeds to this estate weren't taken by an outside burglar.”

Eleanor’s face drained of color, the red of her dress suddenly contrasting sharply with her pale, shocked expression. She stepped backward until her spine hit the mahogany wall.

“What are you implying?” Eleanor whispered, her voice barely audible.

Clara took a deep breath, looking straight into Eleanor’s wide eyes.

“I saw the surveillance footage downloaded onto your husband’s laptop before he caught me,” Clara said softly. “It wasn't a burglar. It was your brother, Marcus, and he transferred the title of this house to an offshore account signed by Julian himself.”
