Chapter 3 - The Family Ledger

The revelation hung in the air like a physical blow, silencing the grand hallway completely. Eleanor stared at her husband, the dazzling diamond necklace around her neck rising and falling rapidly with her shallow, furious breaths. Julian stood slowly, his dark eyes locked onto Eleanor with a chilling calmness that unnerved her more than any outburst could have. The tattoos on his forearm peeked out from beneath his tailored sleeve, a stark reminder of the world he came from before marrying into high society.
“You listened to a servant's gossip, Eleanor,” Julian said smoothly, though a muscle in his jaw twitched. “Clara is desperate. She is carrying a child with no father, living in the servants' quarters, and looking for a scapegoat to secure her own financial future. Are you really going to believe a maid over your own husband?”
Clara let out a sharp gasp of disbelief, stepping away from Julian.
“It’s not gossip!” Clara shouted, her maternal instinct overriding her terror. “I saw the files! The offshore account matches the transfer numbers on your desk ledger. Mr. Vance, you are selling out your wife’s family estate to clear your old gambling debts from the underground syndicates!”
Julian’s expression darkened instantly, all pretense of polite calm vanishing from his handsome face. He closed the distance between them with terrifying speed, his hand gripping Clara’s arm tightly enough to bruise. Eleanor gasped, stepping forward to intervene, but Julian held up a single hand, stopping her in her tracks.
“Be quiet, Clara,” Julian hissed near her ear, his voice a low, threatening rumble meant only for her. “You know nothing about my debts, and you certainly know nothing about what happens to people who dig into things that do not concern them.”
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed as she watched the exchange. Despite her anger toward the maid moments ago, the sudden, aggressive shift in her husband’s demeanor triggered a deep sense of dread in her chest. She had known Julian was ambitious, but she had never seen this dark, ruthless side manifest so openly inside their own home.
“Let go of her, Julian,” Eleanor commanded, her voice ringing with newfound authority. “Release her arm right now. If there is a ledger in your study, we are going to look at it together, right this second.”
Julian slowly loosened his grip, releasing Clara, who stumbled back against the wall, clutching her arm. He turned a slow, calculating smile toward his wife, his dark eyes devoid of any warmth.

“Of course, my love,” Julian murmured, walking past Eleanor toward the study. “Let us look at the ledger together. But before we open that drawer, you should know that Marcus left a voice message on my phone this morning, and it concerns not just our finances, but the real identity of the father of Clara’s unborn child.”
