Chapter 9: Uncovering the Ledger
The basement archives of the Sterling Foundation smelled of old paper, dust, and decades of forgotten bureaucracy. Rows of metal shelving stretched into the dim fluorescent light, holding thousands of financial ledgers, audit reports, and grant requests. Clara walked down the central aisle, her tablet in hand, scanning barcodes and cross-referencing digital databases with physical records. Arthur walked beside her, carrying a flashlight to illuminate the lower shelves where historical documents were stored.
""According to the digital database, Grant 409 was fully disbursed to the regional community development initiative three years ago,"" Clara noted, tapping her screen. ""The records show three million dollars allocated for urban youth programs.""
Arthur frowned, shining his flashlight beam onto a dusty archive box marked *2021 Financial Audits*. ""That doesn't match my recollection. I personally flagged that specific initiative for a secondary review because the initial proposal lacked concrete metrics.""
""Let's pull the physical ledger for that quarter,"" Clara suggested, sliding a heavy cardboard box off the shelf and placing it gently on a wooden examination table.
Together, they opened the box and sifted through the thick folders of yellowed paper. Clara’s sharp eyes scanned the handwritten notes and corporate signatures attached to the grant allocation forms. Within minutes, she pulled out a single sheet of paper clipped to a memo.
""Look at this signature, Mr. Sterling,"" Clara said, pointing to the bottom of the document.
Arthur leaned in closely, adjusting his glasses. The signature at the bottom of the diversion order was not his own, nor was it authorized by the foundation's oversight committee. It bore the initials V.S.—Victoria Sterling.
""She rerouted three million dollars of youth development funds into a shell corporation registered offshore,"" Arthur whispered, the anger rising in his chest, mixed with a deep, crushing sorrow. ""She used the foundation as a personal slush fund while pretending to champion our philanthropic image.""
""And because the digital logs were altered to match the corporate restructuring, internal auditors never caught it,"" Clara added, typing the shell corporation's registration details into her tablet. ""The offshore account is tied directly to the same financial network used to source the sedative she tried to use on you.""
