Chapter 3: The Weight of Inheritance

Victoria sank slowly into a velvet-upholstered chair several seats down from her father, her golden gown pooling around the polished wooden floor like melted metal. The festive atmosphere of the annual Sterling family gala had evaporated, replaced by an atmosphere of intense, suffocating scrutiny. The other invited guests, safely ushered into the adjoining conservatory by the remaining waitstaff, remained blissfully unaware of the crisis unfolding at the head table.

Arthur picked up the wine glass by its stem, swirling the dark red liquid one last time before setting it completely out of reach. He looked at Clara, who stood patiently awaiting further instruction.

""You saved my life tonight, young woman,"" Arthur said, his voice carrying a genuine, albeit weary, depth of gratitude. ""What is your full name?""

""Clara Miller, Mr. Sterling,"" she replied, dipping her head in a polite nod.

""Clara. You saw the danger, you understood the implication, and you acted decisively without causing a panic that could have ruined the entire evening. That requires a level of situational awareness I rarely see in people twice your age,"" Arthur remarked, leaning back in his chair. He glanced back at Victoria, who was now staring fixedly at her own reflection in the polished silverware. ""And it raises a very troubling question. Why would my own daughter desire to poison me?""

Victoria jerked her head up, tears finally welling in her eyes—not of genuine remorse, but of cornered fury. ""I didn't want to kill you, Father! Don't be dramatic. It was a sedative. Just enough to make you sleep through the board meeting tomorrow morning. The restructuring vote requires your physical signature, and your advisors were going to block the green energy divestment. If you were incapacitated for twenty-four hours, the proxy vote would pass automatically under my interim directorship.""

The confession dropped into the room with chilling casualness. Victoria acted as though swapping out a vintage wine for a potent knockout drop was a routine corporate maneuver rather than a criminal act against her own blood.

Arthur felt a sharp pain in his chest, not from any physical ailment, but from the realization of how hollow his life’s work had become. He had amassed a fortune, built an empire, and nurtured an environment where ambition superseded basic human decency. He looked at Clara, then back at Victoria.

""You would drug your own father for a board vote?"" Arthur asked, his voice shaking slightly despite his best efforts to maintain composure.

""You would have given everything to the foundation by the end of the week anyway,"" Victoria hissed back, her mask of polite society fully slipping away. ""I am protecting our legacy.""
