Chapter 7: The Morning After

Sunlight poured through the tall arched windows of the Sterling Estate, bathing the grand library in a brilliant, golden morning light. The dust motes danced lazily in the air, undisturbed by the chaos of the previous night. Arthur Sterling sat behind a massive mahogany desk, reviewing financial portfolios and legal documents spread neatly across the surface. Despite sleeping less than three hours, he felt lighter than he had in years. The weight of family deceit had been lifted, replaced by the stark, bracing reality of a new beginning.

Jonathan Vance entered the library quietly, carrying a fresh cup of coffee and a thick file folder. He placed the folder gently on the desk before taking a seat opposite Arthur.

""The morning papers are already picking up the story, Arthur,"" Jonathan said cautiously. ""Victoria’s legal team is trying to frame it as a severe mental health crisis, attempting to secure a psychiatric hold rather than a criminal trial. But the police have the forensic report. The sedative was pharmaceutical-grade, untraceable in standard consumer markets. It confirms premeditation beyond a shadow of a doubt.""

""Let the courts handle her according to the law,"" Arthur said firmly, not looking up from the document in front of him. ""I will not use my influence to bail her out, nor will I shield her from the consequences of her actions. She made her choice.""

Jonathan nodded slowly, unsurprised by his old friend's resolve. ""And what about the corporate restructuring vote? The board is in an uproar. Without Victoria’s proxy bloc, the green energy divestment proposal will pass unanimously this afternoon. The foundation will receive the eighty percent stake you promised.""

""Good,"" Arthur replied, closing the folder with a definitive snap. ""That was always my intention. Victoria’s greed nearly destroyed everything I spent fifty years building. It’s time to return those resources to where they can actually do some good.""

Jonathan paused, peering over the rim of his glasses. ""There is one more thing. Regarding the young woman who saved your life last night—Clara Miller. The banquet management company called this morning to confirm her schedule, but I took the liberty of intervening.""

Arthur looked up sharply. ""Intervening how?""

May you like

""She shouldn't be serving canapés and pouring wine for ungrateful elites,"" Jonathan said with a slight smile. ""I reviewed her academic transcripts and her background check from her previous security analysis firm. She is exceptionally qualified. I offered her a position as your executive coordinator and chief of internal compliance, reporting directly to you.""

Arthur leaned back in his leather chair, a slow, genuine smile spreading across his face. It was the first time in years he felt truly excited about the future of his enterprise.
