Chapter 5: The Arrival of Authority

Within twenty minutes, the heavy oak doors of the Sterling Estate swung open once more, admitting not celebratory guests, but two uniformed police officers and Jonathan Vance, Arthur’s longtime personal attorney. Jonathan, a sharp-featured man in his fifties with silver-rimmed glasses, surveyed the scene with practiced calm. He took in Arthur’s rigid posture, Victoria’s trembling form, and Clara standing attentively beside the service station.
""Arthur, what is this about?"" Jonathan asked, stepping forward with his briefcase in hand. ""Your call was... alarming, to say the least.""
Arthur gestured toward the table, where the crystal glass of dark red wine still sat untouched, alongside the decanter with the handwritten nametag. ""My daughter Victoria attempted to incapacitate me tonight using a sedative dissolved in this vintage. If not for Clara’s quick thinking, I would have tasted it.""
The two police officers stepped closer, one of them producing a pair of latex gloves and carefully securing the decanter and the glass in evidence bags. The officer then turned his attention to Victoria, who sat frozen in her golden chair, refusing to meet anyone's eyes.
""Miss Sterling, you have the right to remain silent,"" the officer began, reading her rights with calm professionalism. ""Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.""
""This is absurd,"" Victoria muttered, though her voice lacked any real defiance now. She stood up slowly as the officer gently placed handcuffs around her wrists. The metallic click echoed sharply in the grand dining hall, shattering the final illusions of elite impunity. As they led her toward the heavy doors, she glared once at Clara. ""You'll regret this,"" she whispered venomously.
Clara simply met her gaze without flinching, stepping aside to let them pass.

When the doors closed behind them, a heavy, exhausted quiet settled over the room once more. Jonathan Vance exhaled deeply, adjusting his glasses. ""Well, Arthur, that is certainly going to complicate the restructuring vote tomorrow morning.""
""Let the board burn, Jonathan,"" Arthur said, leaning back in his chair and rubbing his temples. The adrenaline was fading, leaving behind the profound fatigue of a man who had just survived an assassination attempt orchestrated by his own flesh and blood. He looked across the table at Clara, who was quietly beginning to clear the service tray, ensuring the area remained pristine. ""Tomorrow, we start dismantling every corrupt structure my family built. But tonight, I need to ensure the person who saved my life is properly thanked.""
