Chapter 7

The drive away from the luxury venue was quiet, save for the steady hum of the car’s heater and the gentle rhythmic breathing of Lily, who had fallen fast asleep across the back seat. Her light blue party dress was slightly wrinkled from the chaos of the afternoon, but her head rested comfortably on a folded wool blanket Julian had retrieved from the trunk before they left the parking lot.

Julian kept his eyes fixed on the wet asphalt ahead, the tires of his SUV kicking up spray from the persistent drizzle that had begun to fall over the city. Beside him in the passenger seat, Elena stared out the window at the blurred neon lights of downtown storefronts. The long white coat was draped over her lap, the damp hem smelling faintly of ozone and old rain.

"You didn't have to hit him," Elena said softly, breaking a silence that had stretched for nearly twenty miles.

Julian kept his hands steady on the steering wheel, his expression neutral. "He was pulling Lily’s hand away from the table hard enough to bruise her wrist. Some lessons require more than paperwork."

Elena turned her head slightly to look at him, the amber glow of a passing streetlamp catching the fine lines of fatigue around her eyes. "Thank you, Julian. For not stopping when everyone else told me the case was closed. If you hadn't intercepted my flight before it landed back in the state... if you hadn't tracked down those dock manifests..."

"I told you I’d look out for the firm," Julian interrupted gently, signaling to merge onto the bridge leading toward the residential districts across the bay. "And more importantly, I told you I'd look out for both of you."

Elena looked back toward the rear seat, where Lily shifted slightly in her sleep, murmuring an incoherent syllable before settling back into stillness. The memory of the past three weeks—hidden in a safehouse in Vancouver while forensic teams quietly untangled the web of forged documents and corporate sabotage Arthur had constructed—felt like a lifetime ago. The woman who had boarded that initial flight was not the same woman sitting here now. The fear had burned away, leaving behind a sharp, focused resilience.

"Arthur’s lawyers will try to delay the asset freeze," Elena said, her voice regaining its professional edge. "They’ll file motions for emergency injunctions, claiming coercion or marital distress."

"Let them file," Julian replied, his voice calm and resolute. "Mark is already cooperating with the district attorney's office to save his own license. By morning, Arthur won't have a lawyer, a company, or a defense."
