Chapter 6

The murmurs outside the private study grew softer as the venue manager ushered the remaining catering staff toward the service exit, effectively sealing the ballroom from the outside world. Inside the room, the tension hung thick and heavy, smelling faintly of melting wax from the decorative candles that still flickered in silver sconces along the wood-paneled walls.

Lily rested her head against Elena’s hip, her eyelids drooping as the adrenaline of the past hour finally gave way to sheer exhaustion. Elena felt the rhythmic pressure of her daughter’s breathing and pulled her coat tighter around herself, using her free hand to stroke the child's tangled brown hair. Her gaze never left Arthur, who remained pressed against the bookshelf like a pinned insect.

"Sit down, Arthur," Elena commanded, pointing a finger at the leather armchair opposite the desk. It wasn't a request; it was an order backed by the unyielding weight of truth.

Arthur swallowed hard, his knees trembling slightly as he pushed off the shelf and collapsed into the chair. He looked smaller now, stripped of the tailored perfection of his groom’s attire. The ruined dark grey suit felt like a costume he had no right wearing.

Julian stepped back toward the door, standing sentinel to ensure no one interrupted them. He watched the dynamic shift with a critical eye, remembering the months he had spent combing through encrypted server logs, bank transfers, and flight manifests just to reach this specific room on this specific afternoon. When Elena had vanished during her flight to Canada three weeks ago, everyone had accepted the narrative of the coastal highway tragedy—everyone except Julian, who knew the exact nature of the corporate battles Elena had been fighting behind closed doors.

"The police are already reviewing the security logs from the Sea-Tac parking garage," Julian said evenly, his voice breaking the stillness of the room. "Mark tried to reach you on your mobile three minutes ago, Arthur. He’s currently sitting in his downtown office waiting for a call that isn't going to come, because his own firm’s compliance officer flagged his signature on the probate filings this morning."

Arthur clutched the armrests of the leather chair, his knuckles turning white. "You can't prove I acted alone. Mark drew up the papers. He handled the filing."

"And you signed every single authorization code with your personal digital key," Elena replied, her tone terrifyingly calm. "The same key tied to your biometric login at the primary vault. You thought death was the ultimate loophole, Arthur. But records don't die just because you bury an empty car."

Lily let out a soft yawn, her small fingers tightening into the fabric of Elena's coat. Elena looked down at her daughter, her expression softening instantly into a well of fierce, protective tenderness that contrasted sharply with the cold steel she had directed at Arthur just moments before.
