Chapter 13

The coastal highway was quiet under a blanket of pale autumn sunlight as Julian’s SUV wound its way along the scenic route toward the northern bluffs. In the back seat, Lily pressed her face against the window, watching the endless expanse of blue ocean crashing against the rocky shore far below.
"Look at the gulls, Mommy!" Lily called out, pointing eagerly as a flock of white seabirds swept gracefully over the crest of a wave.
Elena turned around from the front passenger seat, smiling as she watched her daughter's animated expression. "I see them, sweetie. It's beautiful out here, isn't it?"
Julian kept his hands steady on the steering wheel, wearing the dark green suede jacket that had become a familiar symbol of security and steadfastness over the past few weeks. The road ahead was clear, stretching out toward the horizon without a single trace of the shadows that had haunted them earlier in the month.
They pulled off at a secluded scenic overlook where a wooden observation deck jutted out over the cliffside. The air smelled of salt water, damp pine needles, and clean ocean wind. Julian parked the vehicle and cut the engine, the sudden quiet of the coastline washing over them like a soothing balm.
They walked out onto the wooden deck together. Lily ran ahead, her light blue dress fluttering in the coastal breeze as she leaned against the sturdy wooden railing to gaze out at the vast Pacific expanse. Elena and Julian walked side by side, their shoulders brushing with every step.
"Remember when we first drove past this stretch of highway?" Julian asked quietly, his eyes fixed on the horizon.
"I remember thinking that everything I had built was gone," Elena murmured, slipping her hand into his. His fingers closed securely around hers, warm and unyielding. "I never imagined I'd be standing here looking at the same ocean and feeling completely at peace."
"You built it back yourself, Elena," Julian said, turning to look at her with deep admiration. "I just helped clear away the rubble."

Lily turned around from the railing, waving frantically toward them. "Mommy! Julian! Come look at the seals down on the rocks!"
Elena laughed, a bright, genuine sound that carried out over the crashing waves. She squeezed Julian’s hand once more before they walked over to join the little girl at the edge of the cliff, leaving the past far behind them where it belonged.
