Chapter 14

The federal courthouse in downtown was quiet and cavernous, its polished granite floors echoing with the footsteps of attorneys and court clerks carrying heavy leather briefcases. Inside Courtroom 4B, the trial of Arthur Vance had concluded with swift, unyielding finality.

The presiding judge, a stern magistrate with decades of bench experience, had read the verdict just twenty minutes prior: guilty on all counts of corporate fraud, falsification of public records, and malicious asset misappropriation. Without the shield of legal technicalities or forged probate documents, Arthur’s defense had collapsed entirely under the weight of the forensic audit Julian and Elena had provided.

Elena walked out through the heavy wooden double doors of the courthouse into the bright afternoon sunlight, wearing her tailored navy blazer and dark trousers. Julian walked beside her, carrying his signature leather briefcase, while Lily skipped happily along the stone steps, holding tightly to her mother’s hand.

A few reporters lingered near the bottom of the steps with microphones and cameras, but as Elena paused for a moment and met their gaze with calm, unshakeable authority, they lowered their equipment. There was no scandal left to chase, no dramatic confrontation to broadcast. The truth had won out simply, quietly, and definitively.

"Are we going to get ice cream now?" Lily asked, looking up brightly at her mother with wide brown eyes.

Elena smiled down at her daughter, brushing a stray lock of brown hair out of the little girl's face. "We are going to get all the ice cream you want, sweetheart."

Julian opened the rear door of the SUV parked at the curb, holding out a hand to help Lily climb inside safely. He then turned to Elena, holding the passenger door open as she stepped inside the vehicle. The dark green suede jacket he wore caught the warm afternoon light, looking as timeless and reliable as the man himself.

As Julian slid into the driver's seat and started the engine, he looked across the console at Elena. Her expression was serene, her posture relaxed, and her eyes bright with the promise of a future she had fought hard to reclaim.

"Where to, boss?" Julian asked with a soft smile.

Elena looked back at Lily in the rear seat, then turned her gaze toward the open road ahead of them, where the city skyline met the bright, clear sky.

"Home, Julian," Elena said softly. "Let's go home."
