Chapter 7 - The Trap in the Dark

The metallic click of the door latch turning sounded like thunder in the cramped, dusty space of the AV closet. Lily backed away until her spine hit a stack of cold metal folding chairs, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. She clutched the folded note in her fist so tightly the paper threatened to tear.
The door creaked open an inch, letting in a thin sliver of amber emergency light from the classroom. A gloved hand reached around the edge of the frame, fingers feeling blindly along the wall for a light switch.
"I know you're in here, kid," a low, gravelly voice whispered from the darkness. "Save us both the trouble and hand over the key. You're just a little girl; this isn't your war."
Lily didn't move. She stared at the moving shadow in the doorway, her mind racing. Her father’s words echoed in her head: Trust no one in uniform. But this wasn't a soldier; it was one of the men in the gray suits. The men who had shot her father.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the main classroom, followed by Mrs. Gable’s voice screaming in absolute terror.
"Get away from those children! You have no right to touch them!"
The gloved hand instantly withdrew from the AV closet door, and the heavy boots outside pivoted away from Lily’s hiding spot, sprinting back toward the front of the room.
"Secure the teacher!" the agent barked into a comms unit clipped to his collar. "We've got a civilian interference at Sector Front."
Seizing the narrow window of opportunity, Lily didn't hesitate. She shoved the closet door wide open, slipped out into the chaotic wreckage of the classroom, and kept her head down. The room was obscured by a thick, acrid haze of smoke from a smoke grenade that had apparently been tossed near the doorway. Through the gray fog, she saw Mrs. Gable backed against the chalkboard, shielding Kevin and two other crying students with her own body while two agents tried to force her away.
Her father was slumped against the teacher's podium, his eyes half-closed, breathing shallowly.
Lily’s chest tightened with a sharp, agonizing pain. She wanted to run to him, to press her hands against his bleeding shoulder and beg him to wake up. But the memory of his final, fierce look stopped her cold. Run.
She darted past the struggling adults, keeping low to the floor. As she crossed the threshold into the hallway, her sneaker caught on a discarded backpack, sending her sprawling hard onto the linoleum. The impact knocked the wind out of her lungs, and her chin smacked the hard floor, drawing a sharp taste of copper into her mouth.
Footsteps echoed rapidly down the corridor behind her. Someone was shouting her name—not an agent, but a familiar, panicked voice.
"Lily! Lily, stop!"

She scrambled to her feet, wiping the blood from her chin with the sleeve of her pastel hoodie, and bolted around the corner toward the school's side exit, only to freeze dead in her tracks when she saw who was standing blocking the emergency double doors.
