Chapter 5 - The Voice Over the Intercom

“Attention all staff and students. This is Principal Hayes. We have received an urgent directive from the Department of Defense. Room 104 is under immediate federal quarantine. Do not attempt to open the doors. Repeat, do not—”

The broadcast cut off mid-sentence with a sickening screech of feedback, followed by a dull, heavy thud that sounded like a body hitting the office wall.

In the classroom, the lead federal agent smiled thinly. "Looks like command just streamlined our operation. Hand over the pack, Gordon. You’re out of time and out of options."

"I told you, no," Gordon snarled. With a sudden, explosive movement, he grabbed a heavy oak teacher's chair and hurled it directly at the front windows. The safety glass shattered in a deafening cascade of glittering shards, the amber emergency light pouring directly into the room.

"Run, Lily! Go!" Gordon shouted over the roaring wind rushing in through the broken glass.

Lily didn't hesitate. Survival instinct overrode her terror. She scrambled over her desk, kicking her backpack onto the floor as a decoy, and bolted toward the back of the classroom.

"Stop her!" the second agent yelled, lunging forward.

Gordon intercepted him mid-stride, tackling the larger man to the linoleum with a sickening crunch of bone and heavy tactical gear. They rolled across the floor, knocking over stacks of student art projects and spilling finger-paint across the tiles in streaks of crimson and blue.

Mrs. Gable screamed, covering her face as the other agent drew a sleek, matte-black sidearm and leveled it directly at Gordon’s back.

"Don't move or I will drop you right here!" the agent roared, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Lily reached the AV closet door at the back of the room, her small hands frantically turning the heavy brass handle. It was locked. She threw her entire weight against the wooden panel, sobbing aloud as the metal latch rattled uselessly in its frame.

From the floor, wrestling with the agent, Gordon managed to scream out one final instruction over the chaos.

"The key, Lily! Use the brass key on your neck! It's a master pass for every interior door in this district!"

Lily yanked the leather cord from beneath her pink hoodie, her fingers shaking so badly she nearly dropped the small metal key. Behind her, the sharp, deafening crack of a firearm echoed through the classroom, silencing the children's cries instantly and leaving a thick, acrid smell of gunpowder hanging heavy in the air.
