Chapter 10 - The Mist and the Water Tower

The cold autumn mist hit Lily’s face like a wall of ice as they burst out of the school's side doors and plunged directly into the overgrown field behind the playground. Tall brown weeds whipped against her jeans, soaking the hems of her pants within seconds. Behind them, the muffled shouts of federal agents and the flashing red-and-blue lights of arriving police cruisers painted the gray fog in frantic strokes of crimson and azure.

Marcus kept a tight, bruising grip on her wrist, dragging her through the muddy terrain with a relentless, military-style pace that left Lily gasping for air.

"Slow down! My side hurts!" Lily cried out, stumbling over a hidden tree root and falling hard onto her knees in the wet grass.

Marcus swore under his breath, halting immediately. He dropped to one knee beside her, hauling her back up to her feet with rough efficiency. "We can't stop, Lily. The perimeter drones are already in the air. If they catch us in the open field, thermal imaging will spot us in ten seconds flat."

"Where are we going?" Lily sobbed, wiping mud from her pink pastel hoodie. "Is my dad really hurt? Are we going to see him?"

Marcus hesitated for a fraction of a second, his jaw tightening as he looked back toward the sprawling brick building of the elementary school. Through the mist, the silhouette of the rusted water tower loomed in the distance, its iron legs creaking rhythmically in the rising wind.

"Your dad did what he had to do to buy us time," Marcus said evasively, his voice dropping into a somber register. "He’s a good man, Lily. Don't ever let anyone tell you different. But right now, we have to get that drive to the extraction point before the people in the gray suits lock down the county grid."

"You said he was a rogue asset!" Lily shot back, anger briefly overriding her fear as she jerked her arm out of his grasp. "You said he stole something! You sounded just like those bad men in the hallway!"

"I have to play the part when there are ears everywhere, kid," Marcus muttered, his eyes darting restlessly across the treeline. "The military is divided right now. Half the command structure is covering up what happened at the lab, and the other half is trying to get the truth out before a quarantine order wipes out this entire town. Your father chose a dangerous hill to die on."

"Die?" Lily stopped dead in her tracks, the word hitting her like a physical blow. Her breath caught in her throat. "What do you mean, die? My dad is coming with us to the water tower! He promised!"

Marcus turned to face her, his expression softening into something deeply sorrowful. He knelt down so he was eye-level with the terrified little girl. "The agent back there shot him, Lily. He stayed behind so you could get out. He gave us his last breath to make sure that drive made it out of that school."

Lily stared at him, her mind refusing to accept the words. The image of her father slumped against the podium, bleeding onto the linoleum, flashed behind her eyelids. A raw, piercing cry tore from her chest, but before she could scream out his name, a blinding searchlight cut through the fog above them, followed by the deafening whir of helicopter rotor blades descending directly onto the field.
