Chapter 3 - The Men in the Gray Sedans

The rhythmic thud of combat boots stopped dead outside Room 104. Mrs. Gable stepped instinctively toward the threshold, her hands clasped tightly in front of her cardigan.

"Can I help you gentlemen?" she asked, her voice dipping into that sharp, authoritative teacher register that usually kept rowdy third-graders in line. "This is a secure elementary school property. Visitors are required to sign in at the front office."

The frosted glass panel of the classroom door darkened as two figures filled the frame. Neither wore the standard digital camouflage of Gordon’s unit. Instead, they wore charcoal-gray suits, crisp white shirts, and black tactical vests without any branch insignia or name tags. The taller of the two raised a hand, pushing the door open with a slow, deliberate creak that silenced the remaining whispers of the children.

"Stand down, Staff Sergeant," the lead man said. His voice was low, flat, and carried the terrifying authority of a federal courtroom. "You’re in violation of Article 92. You were ordered to report directly to the debriefing facility at Fort Gordon, not to make unauthorized civilian stops."

Gordon stepped in front of Lily, shielding her entirely from their view with his broad frame. His hand dropped instinctively to his hip, hovering near the empty holster where his sidearm usually rested.

"My daughter has been waiting six months for me to come home," Gordon snapped back, his voice vibrating with a dangerous edge. "I have forty-eight hours of authorized leave starting from the moment my transport touched down. You don't have jurisdiction here off-base."

"Jurisdiction shifted the moment you accessed the primary archive drive at Sector Four," the second agent replied, stepping into the room. His eyes flicked past Gordon, locking directly onto Lily’s frightened face peeking out from behind her father’s elbow. "That little girl isn't the only thing you brought home with you, Gordon. Hand over the envelope."

Lily’s breath caught in her throat. She looked down at the bulky manila packet still wedged into her father’s tactical belt. The red ink stamps were visible now, spelling out words she couldn't fully read: PROPERTY OF USAMRIID – LEVEL FOUR RESTRICTED.

"I don't have what you're looking for," Gordon lied, though a drop of sweat rolled down his bruised temple. "And even if I did, you think I'm handing over state secrets in the middle of a third-grade classroom? You want this? Come and take it in front of twenty witnesses."

Mrs. Gable looked between the men in suits and Gordon, her face pale with mounting panic. "I am calling the principal right now. And if you don't leave these children alone, I'm calling the local sheriff!"

"Don't bother, ma'am," the lead agent said, never breaking eye contact with Gordon as he reached slowly inside his suit jacket. "The local authorities were notified thirty minutes ago that this school is within an active quarantine perimeter. Nobody leaves until we secure what’s in that backpack."
