Chapter 11 - The Chopper in the Mist

The wind from the overhead rotor blades whipped Lily’s blonde pigtails into a wild frenzy, flattening her pink pastel hoodie against her chest and nearly blowing her off her feet. A massive black utility helicopter dropped out of the gray clouds, kicking up a hurricane of dead leaves and mud as it hovered just ten feet above the overgrown field.

The side door slid open with a loud metallic rattle, revealing two figures in dark flight suits silhouetted against the cabin lights. One of them pointed a heavy-duty searchlight directly down at Marcus and Lily, blinding them with a harsh, glaring white beam.

"Get down! Cover your head!" Marcus shouted over the deafening roar of the engine. He shoved Lily down into the wet grass, throwing his own body protectively over hers as a rope ladder dropped from the cabin door, slapping heavily against the mud inches from where they lay.

"Secure the package! Move, move, move!" a voice barked through a loudspeaker mounted on the helicopter’s landing skid.

Lily curled into a tight ball, her hands clamped over her ears, tears streaming freely down her face as she clutched the brass key against her chest. Her father was gone. The school felt like a lifetime away. And now men from the sky were reaching down to grab her.

"Marcus! Don't let them take me!" she screamed, her voice entirely swallowed by the jet turbine roar.

Marcus didn't hesitate. He grabbed the heavy nylon rope ladder with one hand, pulled Lily up by her jacket with the other, and began shouting instructions to the crewman leaning out of the chopper door.

"We have the child! But the perimeter is compromised! Federal ground units are less than a mile out!" Marcus yelled, hoisting Lily’s small frame onto the bottom rung of the ladder.

"Forget the ground units, the whole grid is locking down in three minutes!" the crewman shouted back, reaching down with a powerful, gloved hand to haul Lily up into the dimly lit cabin.

As Lily was dragged over the threshold into the metal belly of the aircraft, she caught a final glimpse of the ground below. Through the swirling mist and exhaust fumes, a convoy of black federal sedans had just smashed through the chain-link fence of the school playground, their emergency lights flashing a frantic warning against the darkening afternoon sky.

The cabin door slammed shut with a heavy, hydraulic thud, instantly muffling the deafening roar of the rotors to a dull, throbbing hum. Lily slumped onto a metal jump seat, shivering violently in her damp hoodie.

Across from her sat a woman in a crisp military intelligence uniform, her silver hair pulled back into a tight bun. She stared at Lily with piercing, analytical eyes before extending a small, sealed plastic evidence bag toward her.

"Put the brass key inside the bag, Lily," the woman said quietly, her voice carrying an air of absolute authority that brooked no argument. "And then tell me exactly what your father whispered to you before he closed the classroom door."
