Chapter 13 - The Missile in the Cloud

The helicopter pitched hard to the right, throwing Lily off the jump seat and sending her sliding across the metal floor. Marcus lunged forward, catching her by the arm just before she slammed into a rack of emergency medical supplies.

"Hold on to me!" Marcus yelled, wrapping both arms around her waist as the aircraft plummeted in a steep, terrifying dive designed to shake off a heat-seeking projectile.

Through the cabin windows, Lily watched in absolute horror as a sleek, silver missile streaked past them in the gray mist, missing their tail rotor by mere yards before detonating harmlessly against a rocky cliffside in the distance. The shockwave rattled the helicopter's frame so violently that overhead panels dropped down, dangling by their electrical wires.

"We've been tracked by a rogue defense satellite!" the co-pilot shouted over the blaring cockpit alarms, his hands flying across the control console. "They have our telemetry data! We can't reach the extraction point at the capital!"

Colonel Vance braced herself against a bulkhead, her face pale but her voice cutting through the panic with razor-sharp calm. "Forget the capital. Set down at the old weather station in sector nine. It's an analog facility—completely shielded from satellite tracking and digital surveillance."

"Colonel, the landing zone is unpaved and surrounded by dense timber!" the pilot protested as the aircraft shuddered under turbulent crosswinds. "It's a suicide drop in this weather!"

"Do it, Sergeant! That's an order!" Vance commanded, her eyes fixed on the secure briefcase resting on her knees.

Lily curled into a tight ball on the floor, burying her face against Marcus’s canvas jacket. The terrifying realization settled over her that the danger hadn't ended when they left the school. The people chasing them didn't just want the drive—they wanted everyone who had ever touched it to vanish permanently, leaving no trace behind.

"Marcus," Lily whispered, her voice muffled against his chest. "Is my dad really gone? Forever?"

Marcus stroked her blonde pigtails gently, his own throat tightening with emotion. "People like your father don't really leave, Lily. Everything he did today was so you could have a future. When we land, we're going to finish what he started. Do you understand?"

Lily nodded slowly, a fierce, quiet resolve replacing some of her terror. She reached up and touched the empty leather cord around her neck where the brass key used to hang, feeling the phantom weight of her father’s protection still lingering against her skin.

The helicopter’s engine pitch changed dramatically, the screaming whine dropping into a heavy, roaring thud as the landing gear slammed down into muddy earth. Outside, the rain was pouring down in sheets, beating a relentless rhythm against the aluminum hull.

The side door slid open with a screech of rusted metal, letting in the freezing night air and the smell of wet pine.

"Go, go, go! Move out!" Colonel Vance shouted, grabbing her briefcase and pulling Lily toward the exit.

As they stepped out onto the muddy clearing of the abandoned weather station, a circle of armed men in standard green Army uniforms emerged from the shadows of the pine trees, their weapons raised—not pointing at them, but scanning the perimeter for pursuers. And standing right in the center of the group, holding a heavy wool blanket, was someone Lily never expected to see alive again.
