Chapter 6 - The Silver Cuffs in the Foyer

The metallic click of the handcuffs being unclipped echoed sharply in the silent foyer, sounding like a death knell for the illusion of the family's untouchable status. Arthur took a desperate step backward, tripping over the edge of the Persian rug and landing awkwardly against the mahogany bookshelf.

"You can't do this," Arthur stammered, raising his hands defensively as the two police officers closed the distance between them. "This is a civil matter! There’s been a gross misunderstanding of corporate governance!"

The lead officer didn't blink. He grabbed Arthur firmly by the expensive lapels of his charcoal suit and spun him around, pressing his wrists behind his back. "Arthur Vance, you are being placed under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and the illegal concealment of fiduciary assets. You have the right to remain silent."

Julianna shrieked, throwing herself at the officer. "Get your hands off him! Do you know who my family is? Do you know how many judges I invite to my charity galas?"

Victoria stepped smoothly between Julianna and the officers, her emerald trench coat acting as an impassable wall. "Save your breath, Julianna. The judges you invite haven't returned your calls since Tuesday. Your social credit expired the moment the warrant was signed."

Eleanor slumped further into the armchair, her pristine white dress looking like a burial shroud against the dark upholstery. She stared blankly at the family portrait frame she had manipulated earlier, the glass now catching the harsh glare of the police flashlights.

Lily hid her face in Marcus’s pink shirt again, her small body shuddering slightly at the commotion. Marcus stroked her light brown hair, whispering quiet reassurances while keeping his gaze locked on his weeping, panicked wife.

"Marcus!" Julianna sobbed, her royal blue dress tearing slightly as she stumbled against the sofa. "Please! We’ve been married for three years! You can't just let them take my brother away! We’re a family!"

Marcus turned his head slowly, looking at her with an absolute emptiness that was terrifying than any burst of anger. "A family? You told my daughter she wasn't a family member twenty minutes ago, Julianna. You made your choice the moment you decided to treat an innocent child like an unwanted guest in her own home."

Arthur was dragged past them toward the front door, his face mottled with rage and humiliation. As he passed Lily, he glared down at the little girl with pure venom. "You little parasite," he hissed. "You'll never survive a single day in this world without us."

"Shut your mouth and keep walking," the second officer snapped, shoving Arthur through the doorway and out into the cooling evening air.

The heavy oak door slammed shut behind them, plunging the foyer into a suffocating silence.

Julianna slid down the side of the sofa until she was sitting on the hardwood floor, her hands trembling as she clutched her head. "What... what are we going to do now?"

Victoria walked over to the mahogany bookshelf, picked up the silver photo frame that Eleanor had displaced, and smashed it against the edge of the table, shattering the glass into a thousand glittering pieces.

"You're going to pack your bags," Victoria said coldly, pointing toward the sweeping staircase. "And you have exactly one hour before the locks are changed."

Julianna looked up, her mascara running down her cheeks in black streaks, and whispered a name that made Victoria’s expression freeze.
