Chapter 11 - The Echo of the Shot

The deafening crack of the gunshot reverberated off the vaulted ceilings, sending a shockwave of terror through the room. A plume of white plaster puffed out from the wall just inches from the Marshal's head, leaving a jagged crater in the vintage wallpaper.

The Marshal didn't flinch. He dropped into a professional tactical stance, drawing his service weapon with practiced precision. "Edward Vance! Drop your weapon immediately! Federal Marshals, you are completely surrounded!"

Edward swore loudly, swinging the revolver back toward Marcus, but it was already too late. Victoria lunged forward with blinding speed, throwing her entire weight against Edward’s arm just as he tried to re-aim. The gun went off a second time, the bullet burying itself harmlessly into the Persian rug near the mahogany bookshelf.

Marcus didn't hesitate. He crossed the remaining distance in a blur of motion, slamming his shoulder into Edward's chest and sending the older man crashing backward onto the wooden stairs. The heavy leather diary flew from Edward's grip, tumbling down the steps and landing open at Lily's tiny feet.

Edward grunted as he hit the stairs hard, the breath knocked entirely out of his lungs. The revolver slipped from his fingers, clattering across the hardwood floor until it came to rest near Victoria’s polished shoes.

The Marshal rushed up the stairs, snapping heavy steel cuffs onto Edward's wrists with practiced efficiency. "You're done, Edward. The bribe didn't clear. Your accounts were frozen twenty minutes before you walked through that door."

Edward spat a mouthful of blood onto the pristine white risers of the staircase, his eyes glaring up with pure, unadulterated hatred. "You think... you think winning this house means anything? Look at the diary, Marcus. Go ahead. Read what your precious Victoria wrote the night your parents burned."

Marcus stood panting at the base of the stairs, his hands trembling as he looked down at the open pages of the heavy leather diary lying on the floor.

Lily knelt down slowly, her small fingers brushing against the aged, yellowed paper of the open book. She looked up at Marcus, her tear-stained face pale as moonlight.

"Daddy," Lily whispered, pointing a shaking finger at a handwritten entry dated twenty-five years ago, right above Victoria's signature. "What does it mean when it says... 'the child was never meant to survive'?"

Marcus dropped to his knees, ignoring the police activity around him, ignoring Julianna sobbing quietly in the corner, and ignoring Eleanor's vacant stare. He pulled the diary toward him, his eyes scanning the ink-stained lines.

The words on the page dissolved all remaining illusions, revealing a family secret so dark and twisted that it threatened to destroy what little humanity they had left.

Marcus looked up slowly, his eyes locking onto Victoria as she stood over Edward's subdued form, her face turning chalk-white.

"Victoria," Marcus whispered, his voice completely devoid of life. "Who am I?"
