Chapter 5 - The Red Folder on the Mahogany Table

The red folder landed on the mahogany bookshelf with a dull, heavy thud that seemed to vibrate through the floorboards. Julianna stared at it as if it were a venomous snake about to strike. Her chest heaved beneath the royal blue silk, her carefully constructed world of wealth and social dominance dissolving into ash before her eyes.

"This is a mistake," Julianna whispered, her voice cracking as she looked wildly around the room for an ally. "Arthur, do something! Call our lawyers. Call anyone!"

Arthur stood frozen, his eyes glued to the red folder. He knew the legal reality better than anyone; he was the one who had quietly embezzled funds from the dormant trust accounts to finance his lavish gambling debts over the past two years. If Victoria Vance was here with federal auditors, he wasn't just losing a house—he was looking at a prison cell.

"Victoria," Arthur began, his voice adopting a sickeningly sweet, conciliatory tone that made Marcus want to hit him. "Let's not be hasty. We can discuss this in the study over a glass of scotch. There’s no need to involve children in adult financial matters."

Victoria stood up slowly, her emerald-green trench coat swishing around her ankles. She looked at Arthur with undisguised contempt. "Adult financial matters? You embezzled four million dollars from a trust meant for an orphaned child, Arthur. You didn't just cross an ethical line; you signed your own arrest warrant."

Eleanor gasped, clutching her chest as her knees buckled. She sank heavily onto the cream-colored armchair, her face draining of all color. "Arthur... is that true? You touched the family reserve?"

"Mother, don't listen to her!" Arthur snapped, sweating profusely now. "She’s manipulating the narrative to seize control of the estate!"

Marcus stepped forward, placing a protective hand on Lily’s shoulder. "She isn't manipulating anything, Arthur. The auditors have been tracking your offshore accounts for three months. I was the one who gave them the passwords."

Julianna whipped her head around, her eyes wide with shock and pure betrayal. "You? Marcus, you helped them investigate my brother?"

"Your brother?" Marcus laughed bitterly. "Arthur is your brother, Julianna. And for three years, you both treated me like an indentured servant in my own marriage, while using my salary to pay off his debts, all while plotting to kick Lily and me out the moment your new social climbing scheme went through."

Victoria opened the red folder and pulled out a single sheet of paper, handing it to Marcus. "Here is the emergency injunction. It grants immediate guardianship and asset freezing rights to Marcus, effective immediately."

Lily looked up at her father, her eyes wide and confused. "Daddy, does this mean we don't have to leave?"

Marcus smiled down at her, kneeling to wipe away the last remaining tear on her cheek. "No, sweetie. It means they have to leave."

Before anyone could process the command, the heavy oak front doors flew open once more, and two uniform police officers stepped into the foyer, their eyes fixed directly on Arthur.
