Chapter 12 - The Ink on the Final Page

The question hung in the air like a physical weight, heavier than any legal document, deadlier than any bullet. Victoria stared down at Marcus, her chest rising and falling in shallow, frantic gasps. The impenetrable facade of the wealthy, powerful matriarch had vanished completely, leaving behind a woman trapped by decades of deception.
"Marcus..." Victoria began, her voice cracking, sounding fragile and old for the first time. "Please. You don't understand the context of what was written on that page."
"Context?" Marcus let out a dry, mirthless laugh that sounded more like a sob. He pointed a shaking finger at the yellowed paper where Lily's small hand still rested. "It says right here, in your own handwriting: 'The child was never meant to survive the fire, but if he does, he must never know he is the true heir to the Vance empire.' Who is the child, Victoria? Me... or Lily?"
Edward let out a raspy, malicious chuckle from where he was pinned to the stairs by the Marshal. "Tell him, Victoria! Tell your precious adopted nephew whose blood actually runs through his veins. Tell him why you raised him like a servant in his own birthright!"
Lily looked up at Marcus, her big brown eyes filled with an innocent, heartbreaking confusion. "Daddy? Are we... are we not real family?"
Marcus pulled Lily into his arms, crushing her against his chest as if he could physically shield her from the truth crashing down around them. He glared at Victoria, his eyes burning with a terrifying mix of grief and fury.
"Answer me," Marcus demanded, his voice dropping to a harsh, lethal whisper. "Who am I?"
Victoria closed her eyes, letting a single tear slip down her cheek and vanish into the collar of her emerald trench coat. "You aren't my nephew, Marcus. You're my son."
The living room seemed to tilt on its axis.
Julianna stopped sobbing, her head snapping up from the floor where she sat in her ruined royal blue dress. "What did you say?"
"He's my son," Victoria repeated, the confession tearing out of her throat like a physical wound. She looked directly at Marcus, who sat frozen on the floor, the diary slipping from his numb fingers. "When the fire broke out twenty-five years ago, Edward and his brothers tried to kill my infant child to secure the entire estate for their branch. To save you, I smuggled you out through the basement, gave you to my trusted maid to raise as an orphan, and pretended to be your doting aunt when I returned years later."
Eleanor let out a sharp gasp, clutching the arms of her armchair as the full scope of the multi-generational conspiracy finally settled over her. "You... you hid him right under our noses all this time?"
"I had to," Victoria defended fiercely, her voice rising as she looked at the older woman. "If I had raised him as my own son, Edward would have finished the job. It was the only way to keep him breathing. And when Lily was born... when my brother's granddaughter needed a home... I brought her back to the only place that legally belonged to our bloodline."
Marcus sat motionless, the floor seeming to drop away beneath him. Every memory of his childhood, every polite smile from Victoria, every cruel remark from Arthur and Julianna—it had all been part of a bloody chessboard where he was nothing more than a pawn.
Before anyone could speak another word, a sharp, metallic sound echoed from the front hallway, followed by a heavy crash against the outer door.

The Marshal unholstered his weapon again, turning toward the foyer. "Stay down! Someone is trying to break through the front security barricade!"
