Chapter 2 - The Secret Clause in the Foundation

Marcus felt the blood rush to his ears, a hot, blinding wave of adrenaline that made his knuckles turn white as he held his daughter closer. The living room had fallen into a tomb-like stillness. Even Eleanor, usually so poised behind her white dress and silver hair, lowered the photo frame with a nervous clatter.

"What did you just say, Lily?" Marcus asked, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all warmth.

"Daddy, Rachel told me in the kitchen yesterday," Lily whispered again, her small voice trembling against his chest. "She said the real owners are arriving next Monday, and we have to leave because this house never belonged to us anyway."

Julianna stepped forward, her face twisted in panic, though she tried desperately to mask it beneath a veneer of aristocratic disdain. "The child is hallucinating, Marcus. You know how imaginative she gets. Arthur, tell him she’s making things up."

Arthur cleared his throat, adjusting his tie once more. "Indeed, Marcus. Let's not make a scene in front of the photographer. We have an image to maintain. The social society gala is tomorrow night, and we cannot afford any domestic disruptions."

Marcus stood up slowly, keeping Lily safely behind his leg. He looked past Arthur, past Julianna, and fixed his gaze on Eleanor. The older woman refused to meet his eyes, instead busying herself with straightening the silver picture frame she had just rearranged.

"Maintenance?" Marcus repeated, a dark chuckle escaping his lips. "You talk about maintenance while you throw my daughter out of her own living room? And what is this about next Monday? Who is Rachel, and why does the house staff know something about our displacement that I don't?"

Julianna’s eyes darted toward the hallway where the housekeeper had presumably vanished. "Rachel is just an impressionable maid who listens to neighborhood gossip. You're letting a seven-year-old child and household rumors dictate your tone toward your own wife?"

"My wife," Marcus spat the word out like poison, "would never treat a child the way you just treated Lily. You made it explicitly clear that she doesn't belong here. But if Rachel's rumor has any truth to it, none of us belong here."

Eleanor finally looked up, her expression hardened into pure frost. "Watch your tone, Marcus. You forget whose name is on the deed, and whose family name built the foundation of this estate."

"Is it?" Marcus stepped closer to the matriarch, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "Because I just received a certified letter from the municipal land registry this morning."
