Chapter 3 - The Certified Letter on the Kitchen Table

The mention of the municipal land registry acted like a physical blow to the assembled family. Arthur’s confident posture faltered, his shoulders slumping just a fraction of an inch. Julianna stopped breathing entirely, her chest frozen beneath the expensive royal blue silk.

"What letter?" Arthur demanded, trying to sound authoritative, though his voice cracked on the final syllable.

Marcus didn't answer immediately. He reached into the inner pocket of his dress pants and pulled out a heavy, off-white envelope bearing the official gold seal of the city records office. He didn't open it; he simply held it up like a shield.

"I received it at my office downtown," Marcus said, his eyes scanning the faces of the people who had tolerated him only because he brought wealth and stability into their fading aristocratic circle. "It states that the trust managing this estate was dissolved three years ago, on the exact day I married Julianna."

Julianna swallowed hard, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "That's... that's impossible. Corporate reorganizations take months. You're lying to deflect from your daughter's bad behavior."

"Am I?" Marcus took a step forward, forcing Arthur and Julianna to back away. "The trust wasn't managed by your corporate lawyers, Julianna. It was managed by an independent executor. And the sole beneficiary isn't you, Eleanor. Nor is it Arthur. And certainly not you, my dear wife."

Lily peeked out from behind Marcus’s leg, clutching her stuffed rabbit tightly. She didn't understand the legal jargon, but she understood the terror in the adults' eyes.

"Then who?" Eleanor whispered, her voice losing its icy composure for the first time. She gripped the edge of the mahogany bookshelf so hard her knuckles turned white. "Who owns the estate?"

Marcus smiled, but there was no humor in it—only a cold, calculated fury that had been brewing for months. "That's the fascinating part. The deed was transferred to a minor. A child born out of wedlock, legally adopted through a closed court order finalized last week. The person who owns this house, and every piece of art hanging on these walls, is someone Julianna spent the last three years trying to erase."

Arthur lunged forward, his face flushed with rage. "You absolute fool! You signed away our security for a ghost?"

"I signed nothing," Marcus replied calmly, stepping back as the front doorbell suddenly rang, cutting through the heavy tension like a razor blade.
