Chapter 9 - The Frozen Vaults

The dim, sterile lighting of the federal holding facility interrogation room felt like a physical weight pressing down on Julian’s shoulders. The heavy steel table separated him from the prosecutor, but the real barrier was the insurmountable wall of evidence stacked neatly in front of him. On the wall-mounted television, the live broadcast of Clara’s press conference continued to stream, her calm, authoritative voice echoing through the small room like a persistent drumbeat of doom.

Julian reached up, his fingers digging into his short blond hair as he stared at the printed wire-transfer logs. "This is a mistake," he whispered, his voice cracking with desperation. "The family trust is protected by international maritime law. You can't just freeze accounts based on an unverified corporate audit."

The prosecutor slid a thick, blue-backed document across the steel table. "It’s not an unverified audit, Mr. Vance. It’s a court-ordered asset seizure authorized by a federal judge thirty minutes ago. Furthermore, the petition was filed by Clara Vance in her capacity as majority shareholder and sole legal executor of the Vance Family Emergency Mandate."

Julian grabbed the document, his eyes scanning the legal jargon until they hit the signature line at the bottom. Clara’s signature was sharp, precise, and completely unwavering. Every asset his grandfather had accumulated over forty years in shipping and real estate—properties in Zurich, shell companies in the Caymans, private holdings in London—had been systematically locked, frozen, and transferred into a secure receiver account controlled entirely by Clara.

"She stripped us," Julian muttered, the color draining completely from his face. "She took everything."

"Not everything," a cold, sharp voice interrupted from the doorway of the interrogation room.

Julian looked up. Elena Sterling stood in the doorway, escorted by a female guard. Her elegant red dress was wrinkled, the fabric stained with spilled coffee from the holding pen. Her dark hair, usually impeccably styled, fell in wild tangles around her face. Gone was the arrogant smirk that had accompanied her down the office hallway just days before. In its place was a look of pure, unadulterated venom.

"Your wife didn't just take your money, Julian," Elena spat, stepping into the room and slamming a manila folder down on the table. "She took my family’s primary liquidity fund as collateral for her corporate restructuring."

Julian stared at her, dumbfounded. "What are you talking about?"

"I’m talking about the fact that my father’s hedge fund was deeply leveraged against the Apex Holdings accounts," Elena said, her voice shaking with restrained fury. "When Clara froze those assets, she triggered an automatic cross-default clause across three major European banks. My family is bankrupt, Julian. My father had a heart attack twenty minutes ago when the margin calls hit."

Julian sank back into the metal chair, the breath rushing out of his lungs. He had thought he was the master manipulator, pulling the strings behind every corporate boardroom door and glass-railed atrium. Instead, he and Elena were nothing more than pawns who had walked straight into a trap designed by a woman they had profoundly underestimated.
