Chapter 7 - The Flashbulbs

The grand ballroom of the downtown financial district hotel was blindingly bright, flooded with the harsh, rhythmic flashing of a hundred camera strobes. Microphones from every major news network in the country were jammed tightly onto the polished walnut podium, creating a thick forest of metal and foam. Clara stood backstage, adjusting the collar of her immaculate white blazer. Cradled securely in her left arm was the sleeping newborn baby, wrapped in a soft, cream-colored cashmere blanket that shielded the child’s face from the glaring lights. She took a deep, steadying breath, feeling the cool, conditioned air fill her lungs. This was the exact stage where Julian had planned to announce his corporate merger with Elena Sterling just three days ago—the very merger built on fraud, betrayal, and an attempt on her life.
Arthur Pendelton stood beside her, holding a heavy leather folder. "Are you certain about this, Clara?" he asked quietly, his voice laced with genuine concern. "Once you step out there, there is no turning back. The old guard will rally, and Julian’s defense attorneys will paint you as a vengeful mastermind."
"Let them try," Clara replied without missing a beat, her dark eyes fixed on the heavy velvet curtains separating her from the press corps. "Truth is the only weapon that doesn't rust, Arthur. And I have receipts for every single lie Julian ever told."
She stepped forward, pushing the heavy velvet curtain aside and walking out onto the stage. The wall of flashing lights hit her like a physical wave, but she did not blink, nor did she flinch. She walked with the poised, unshakeable dignity of a sovereign claiming an empire. The roar of a hundred reporters shouting overlapping questions crashed through the auditorium like rolling thunder.
Clara approached the podium, gently setting the baby carrier down in a secure, soundproofed bassinet resting just behind the desk where a team of nannies waited discreetly. She placed both hands flat on the wooden surface of the podium, leaning slightly forward into the forest of microphones.
The sudden, piercing silence that followed her movement was deafening. Every camera locked onto her face. Every reporter held their breath.
"Good afternoon," Clara began, her voice projecting cleanly and powerfully through the amplification system, carrying across the entire ballroom and out to millions of live-stream viewers nationwide. "Three days ago, an attempt was made on my life at the St. Jude Atrium. Today, the federal government indicted my husband, Julian Vance, for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and attempted murder."
A collective gasp rippled through the front rows of the press corps, followed by an immediate, deafening explosion of frantic shouting and flashing lights.

Clara paused, letting the chaos peak before she raised a single, perfectly manicured hand to silence the room. "But I am not here today to talk about my husband's crimes," she continued, her voice dropping an octave, cold and absolute. "I am here to announce the complete restructuring of Vance Enterprises, and to expose the secret shadow corporation that has been quietly draining our city’s public infrastructure for the past decade."
