Chapter 8 - The Shadow Ledger

The sheer weight of Clara’s words seemed to suck all the air out of the grand ballroom. Flashbulbs continued to fire in rapid succession, painting the stage in erratic flashes of brilliant white light. Reporters leaned over their folding tables, their fingers flying across laptop keyboards as shorthand stenographers scrambled to keep up with the broadcast. Clara stood tall behind the walnut podium, her white blazer reflecting the harsh glare of the television cameras. She didn't use notes. Every detail, every transaction, and every hidden name was burned into her memory with crystalline clarity during the long, agonizing months she had spent playing the dutiful, silent wife while secretly auditing Julian’s private ledgers.
"For ten years," Clara continued, her voice cutting cleanly through the murmur of the crowd, "a shell company known as Apex Holdings has been systematically siphoning municipal development funds meant for public housing and hospital expansions, funneling them directly into private offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands."
She reached down, pulling a single, thick document from the lower shelf of the podium and holding it up for the cameras to see. The cover page bore the official stamp of the federal prosecutor's office, alongside the corporate seal of Apex Holdings.
"The primary signatory on those offshore accounts was not Julian Vance," Clara said, her eyes scanning the front row of journalists, locking onto the reporter from the Financial Times. "It was Elena Sterling’s family trust—the very trust that was financing the hostile merger of this company."
Backstage, watching the live broadcast on a muted monitor in the green room, Arthur Pendelton crossed his arms, a slow, grim smile spreading across his face. Clara wasn't just defending herself; she was detonating a tactical nuke that would bring down half the city's financial elite along with her ex-husband.
In the federal holding facility across town, sitting in a stark, windowless interrogation room with steel handcuffs still resting on the table before him, Julian Vance stared blindly at the wall-mounted television screen. His tailored blue suit jacket hung over the back of a metal chair, his white shirt collar unbuttoned. He watched his wife on the live news feed, her voice echoing off the concrete walls with terrifying authority.
"She’s insane," Julian muttered, his voice trembling as he gripped the edge of the metal table. "She’s destroying everything we built."
"She’s destroying everything you stole, Mr. Vance," the federal prosecutor corrected quietly, stepping out from the shadows of the observation booth into the interrogation room, holding a printed copy of the Apex Holdings transfer logs. "And according to our latest wire intercepts, your father’s offshore accounts just hit a wall of frozen assets. Someone initiated a total asset sweep twenty minutes ago."

Julian’s head snapped up, his eyes wide with sheer horror as the pieces clicked together. Clara hadn't just taken the company—she had systematically locked down every single dollar the Vance family owned worldwide, leaving them utterly destitute.
