Chapter 5 - The Lobby Trap

The heavy mahogany doors of the boardroom remained wide open, framing the long, sterile hallway that led back to the elevators. Julian stood frozen, the thick folder containing his financial ruin clutched in his trembling hands. The silence in the room was deafening, broken only by the soft, steady breathing of the newborn baby resting against Clara’s chest. Elena’s face had drained of all color, her elegant red dress suddenly looking less like a statement of power and more like a warning flag of impending disaster.
"You planned this," Julian whispered, his voice cracking as the horrifying reality set in. His short blond hair, usually meticulously styled, was now ruffled from where his hands had repeatedly pulled at it in panic. "The trip to the mall... the argument... you baited me into pushing you."
Clara looked down at her child, her expression softening into a gentle, maternal warmth before she raised her cold, piercing eyes back to her husband. "I didn't need to bait you, Julian. I simply stopped hiding who you really were. You walked into the trap of your own arrogance. You believed that because I was pregnant, I was weak. You believed that because you had money, you were untouchable."
"Security!" Elena shrieked, losing her composure entirely as she stepped toward the doorway. "Somebody do something! Call the police—real police, not these corporate cowards!"
As if on cue, the private elevator at the end of the hallway chimed softly. The brushed-steel doors slid open with a smooth, mechanical whisper. Three men stepped out into the hallway. Two of them wore dark federal windbreakers marked with bold yellow letters: FBI - FINANCIAL CRIMES DIVISION. The third man was a local precinct detective carrying a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. They didn't rush. They walked with the methodical, unhurried pace of executioners walking toward a guillotine that had already been tripped.
Julian took a involuntary step backward, his back hitting the edge of the mahogany table. He looked at Elena, whose eyes were wide with sheer terror.
"Julian Vance?" the lead federal agent asked, his voice echoing cleanly through the high-rise hallway as he stopped just outside the open boardroom doors. "And Elena Sterling?"
Arthur Pendelton leaned back in his leather chair, steepling his fingers together as he watched the federal agents approach. "Take your time, gentlemen," the old man said calmly. "Mr. Vance has a great deal of explaining to do regarding offshore wire transfers and falsified safety inspection reports at our downtown construction sites."
Julian looked pleadingly at Clara one last time, searching for a shred of the woman he had tried to discard at the shopping mall. But there was nothing left for him in her eyes—only the cold, unyielding reflection of a woman holding all the cards.

The federal agent stepped across the threshold of the executive office, pulling the handcuffs from his belt with a sharp, metallic click.
