Chapter 4 - The Fifty-One Percent

The afternoon sunlight beat down mercilessly through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the Vance Enterprises boardroom, yet Julian felt as though he had been plunged into a freezing ocean. His tailored blue suit felt restrictive, choking the breath right out of his lungs. He stared at the documents resting on the mahogany table, his mind racing through millions of corporate loopholes and financial statements, trying to find a mathematical error that would explain this nightmare. But the numbers didn’t lie. Fifty-one percent. Controlling interest. Vance Enterprises, the crown jewel of the city’s financial district, had slipped through his fingers while he was busy celebrating a victory that never truly existed.
"This is impossible," Julian muttered, stepping further into the room, his voice shaking with a mix of rage and utter disbelief. "My father’s will explicitly locked the primary shares in a family trust. Unless—"
"Unless the primary beneficiary executed a legal emergency proxy clause due to severe physical endangerment and corporate malfeasance," Clara finished for him, her tone clinical and razor-sharp. She gently shifted the sleeping infant in her arms, her white blazer catching the light. "Section twelve, paragraph four of your grandfather’s charter, Julian. If an heir is subjected to attempted homicide on corporate or associated properties, their voting rights are instantly tripled to protect the enterprise from hostile internal takeovers."
Elena grabbed Julian’s arm, her fingernails digging deep through the fine wool of his suit jacket. "She’s lying, Julian! Fight it! Call the board! These men wouldn't just hand over a multi-million-dollar conglomerate to a woman who just walked out of a hospital!"
"We aren't handing over anything, Miss Sterling," Arthur Pendelton, the elderly head of the board’s ethics committee, spoke up. He adjusted his glasses, looking at Elena with undisguised disgust. "We are simply correcting a catastrophic error in judgment. We have reviewed the security footage from the St. Jude Atrium. We have listened to the audio recordings of Mr. Vance shouting threats of violence down a public stairwell. The board has unanimously voted to strip Julian of his CEO status."
Julian’s head snapped toward Arthur. "You can’t do that! I built the Asian market expansion! I secured the municipal contracts!"
"You embezzled corporate funds to finance Miss Sterling’s offshore accounts," Clara countered softly, sliding a second folder across the table toward her husband. "And those municipal contracts? The federal indictment was signed this morning, Julian. They are waiting for you in the lobby."

Julian stared at the folder, his heart pounding against his ribs like a trapped animal. He looked from the cold, indifferent faces of the board members to Clara, who sat atop the executive chair as if it were a medieval throne. He realized then that he had not just lost a company; he had walked directly into a well-laid trap.
