Chapter 6 - The Descent

The heavy steel handcuffs locked around Julian’s wrists with a sharp, metallic snap that echoed off the mahogany walls of the executive boardroom. He flinched, the cold metal biting into his skin as the federal agent yanked his arms behind his back. The tailored blue suit he had worn with such pride that morning now felt like a straightjacket, the fine Italian wool rumpled and stained with his own cold sweat. Beside him, Elena let out a muffled sob as the second set of cuffs secured her wrists, her elegant red dress catching awkwardly on the edge of the doorway as the officers pulled her backward into the hallway.
Julian strained against the grip of the agents, casting one desperate look toward the head of the table. Clara had not moved an inch. She sat in the massive leather executive chair, her white blazer crisp and unblemished, gently rocking the newborn baby against her chest. She watched him being led away with the detached indifference of a deity observing a mortal’s inevitable fall.
"You can't do this!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking with panic as the agents dragged him past the threshold and down the corridor. "This is a hostile coup! Clara! You’ll pay for this! You hear me?!"
His voice faded as the private elevator doors slid shut, sealing him inside the metal cage that would carry him down to the subterranean parking garage where unmarked squad cars waited. The heavy boardroom doors clicked shut automatically, cutting off the noise of the outside world and restoring absolute, suffocating silence to the forty-fifth floor.
Arthur Pendelton stood up slowly from his seat, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows to watch the flashing red and blue lights of the federal vehicles gathering on the street far below. "An impressive execution, Mrs. Vance," the old lawyer said without turning around. "The board is entirely yours. But cutting the head off the snake rarely kills the poison completely. Julian’s father still holds significant unvouched assets hidden overseas through the old family trust."
Clara looked down at the baby in her arms, her thumb gently stroking the infant’s soft cheek. "Let him try to reach them from a federal penitentiary," she replied softly, her voice steady and resolute. "Julian’s father was a cautious man, but he wasn't invincible. And neither is his offshore network. I already have forensic accountants tracing the wire transfers as we speak."
Arthur turned back, raising an eyebrow in quiet admiration. "And the media? The press is already swarmings down in the lobby, demanding to know why the CEO of Vance Enterprises was just led out in handcuffs."

Clara stood up from the executive chair, the white blazer falling sharply around her silhouette. She walked toward the massive glass window, looking down at the swirling crowd of reporters below. "Let them swarm," she whispered, her eyes flashing with dangerous clarity. "I’m about to call a press conference."
