Chapter 7

At the downtown police precinct, the interrogation room smelled of stale coffee, old floor wax, and the quiet desperation of countless suspects who had sat in the same metal chair before him. Arthur sat rigidly at the scarred wooden table, his green polo shirt looking rumpled, his thick wrists free of the handcuffs for the moment as he nursed a styrofoam cup of water. Detectives Martinez and Ross sat opposite him, their expressions completely neutral.

Detective Martinez slid the downloaded copy of the smartphone video across the table, tapping the screen with a blunt finger. “We’ve reviewed the footage from multiple angles, Mr. Arthur. It clearly shows you approaching the child, raising a weapon, and initiating a hostile confrontation that directly resulted in severe bodily harm to a five-year-old minor.”

Arthur scoffed, leaning back in his chair with a theatrical display of indignant disbelief. “It’s completely out of context. You city cops don’t understand traditional parenting. Kids these days have no respect, no boundaries. A firm hand keeps them on the straight and narrow. I was teaching her a lesson about respecting personal property.”

“Raising a leather belt to a five-year-old girl is not parenting, Mr. Arthur; it’s aggravated assault and child endangerment,” Detective Ross stated calmly, leaning forward into the light. “Furthermore, we’ve spoken with your daughter Sarah, and she has detailed a decades-long pattern of physical abuse within that household. We are looking at felony charges that carry significant prison time.”

Arthur’s face flushed a deep, mottled crimson. For seventy years, he had operated under the assumption that his home was his private kingdom where his word was absolute law. The idea that the state—that his own daughter—was holding him accountable for hitting a child was completely incomprehensible to his rigid worldview.

“My daughter is an ungrateful liar influenced by modern nonsense!” Arthur slammed his palm onto the wooden table, the cup of water sloshing over the rim. “I built that family from the ground up! I provided for every single one of them! They would be nothing without my discipline!”

Detective Martinez didn’t flinch at the outburst. He simply signaled through the two-way mirror for the recording equipment to note the suspect’s aggressive demeanor and refusal to cooperate. “Your anger isn’t going to help you here, Mr. Arthur. You’re being formally charged with felony child abuse, domestic assault, and reckless endangerment. You’ll be held without bail pending your arraignment tomorrow morning.”

As the heavy metal door swung open and two officers stepped in to escort Arthur back to the holding cells, the reality of his situation finally began to sink in. The king had been dethroned, not by an invading army, but by a five-year-old girl reaching for an orange soda and a mother who finally decided to speak the truth.
