Chapter 10: The Arraignment

The courtroom of the county municipal courthouse was packed to capacity with reporters, curious onlookers, and legal aides murmuring quietly among themselves. The air was cool and smelled of polished wood and old paper. At the defense table, Arthur sat flanked by a public defender who looked thoroughly exhausted by the sheer volume of damning evidence. Arthur’s face was set in a stubborn scowl, his shoulders hunched in his orange jail jumpsuit, refusing to look at the gallery behind him.
When Judge Thomas entered the courtroom, everyone stood in respectful silence. The judge was a formidable woman in her fifties with sharp spectacles and an unsmiling demeanor that commanded immediate obedience. She adjusted her glasses, peering down at the thick file before her with a critical eye.
“We are here for the arraignment of Arthur Sterling, case number 448-B, charged with felony child abuse, domestic assault, and reckless endangerment,” Judge Thomas announced, her voice echoing clearly off the high ceiling. “Counsel, how does the defendant plead?”
Arthur’s public defender stood up quickly. “Not guilty, Your Honor. The defense maintains that this unfortunate incident was a misunderstanding regarding household discipline and an accidental fall, not a criminal assault.”
Judge Thomas raised an eyebrow, a flicker of genuine irritation crossing her features. She picked up a tablet displaying the verified video footage of the kitchen incident. “Counsel, I have personally reviewed the digital evidence submitted by the prosecution. I saw a grown man brandishing a weapon at a five-year-old child over a soft drink. I saw a child terrified for her physical safety, tripping and sustaining a severe head injury as a direct result of that terror. There is no misunderstanding here.”
Arthur leaned forward, whispering urgently to his public defender, seemingly desperate to speak in his own defense. The public defender gently placed a hand on his arm, urging him to remain silent.

“Given the severity of the charges, the clear evidence of flight risk and intimidation of witnesses, and the ongoing threat to public safety and the welfare of the minor victim, the state’s motion to deny bail is granted,” Judge Thomas ruled firmly, banging her gavel with a sharp crack that silenced the courtroom. “The defendant will be remanded to county custody until the preliminary hearing scheduled for next month.”
Arthur was led away by two bailiffs, his face pale with shock and indignation as he realized that his courtroom appeals to tradition and authority carried no weight whatsoever in the face of undeniable truth. Sarah, watching from the gallery with her brother, let out a slow, steady breath. The legal wall had held.
