Chapter 1

The birthday banners rustled softly in the air conditioning, casting cheerful blue and yellow shadows across the polished kitchen floor. Five-year-old Lily sat on her heels, her pink sandals tucked neatly beneath her green floral dress, her small fingers clutching an icy can of orange soda retrieved from the blue cooler. When her grandfather, Arthur, stepped heavily into the kitchen in his green polo shirt and brown pants, holding his leather belt like a badge of office, the festive atmosphere curdled instantly. Arthur despised disobedience above all else, viewing any boundary crossed by a child as a personal insult to his patriarchal authority.

“You don't touch things without asking!” Arthur bellowed, his face darkening with a rage that completely overwhelmed the joyful occasion.

Startled by the sudden roar and the intimidating sight of the raised belt, Lily scrambled backward in blind panic. Her small heel caught the edge of a stray ceramic tile. She tripped violently, tumbling hard onto the unforgiving floor. Her small head struck the sharp corner of the kitchen island with a sickening thud. A sharp cry escaped her lips before she crumpled into a silent, unmoving heap. A dark crimson pool began to spread across the white grout, stark against the bright room.

Arthur froze, the belt still clutched in his thick fist, his expression flickering from explosive anger to sudden, calculating shock. From the corner, the uncle filming the party with his phone kept the device rolling, capturing the exact moment the chaos erupted. Grandma hurried over, her maroon top fluttering as she knelt beside the bleeding child.

Instead of panic, a chilling coldness settled over the room. Sarah, Lily’s mother, rushed forward, but before she could cradle her bleeding daughter, Aunt Clara stepped in, pressing a thick white towel against the weeping head wound. Clara looked down at the injured girl with harsh eyes and spoke with a terrifying firmness that shocked even the bystanders.

“She deserved it for being disrespectful,” Clara declared, her voice devoid of maternal instinct or basic human empathy.

Sarah stared at her sister in utter disbelief, the shock of the injury momentarily giving way to a deeper, more profound horror. This family was entirely broken, governed by an unspoken code of cruelty disguised as discipline. But Sarah was done hiding the rot. As the front door rattled open and two uniformed police officers stepped inside the house, Sarah stood up slowly, her eyes locked on her father.

“Officer, he struck my daughter with a belt,” Sarah shouted, her voice trembling with a righteous fury that cut through the stifling air. “It's all on camera.”
