Chapter 3

Officer Miller took the smartphone from the trembling hands of the uncle, his expression professional and guarded. The screen illuminated his weathered face with a harsh blue glow as he pressed play. The video started with the wide shot of the brightly lit kitchen, the cheerful birthday banners fluttering in the artificial breeze, and little Lily opening the blue cooler. The audio played back clearly, capturing the cheerful innocence of the five-year-old’s voice saying, “Here!” before Arthur stepped into the frame with his dark expression.
As the video progressed to the medium shot, the audio of Arthur’s angry roar echoed through the tense kitchen: “You don't touch things without asking!” The visual of the raised belt was unmistakable, defying any claim of an accidental trip. Then came the chilling close-up: Lily tripping on the tile floor, falling hard, and hitting her head, followed by her tearful, heartbreaking apology: “I'm sorry, Grandpa.”
Officer Miller’s jaw tightened visibly. He did not need to watch the rest of the clip to know that Arthur’s narrative of an innocent accident was a complete fabrication. The video clearly established a direct causal link between the grandfather’s aggressive assault and the child’s severe injury.
“That’s clear enough,” Officer Miller muttered, handing the phone to his partner for secure digital evidence bagging. He turned his piercing gaze back to Arthur. “Sir, I am placing you under arrest for child abuse and endangerment. Put the belt down and place your hands behind your back.”

Arthur’s face contorted in disbelief and outrage. He looked around the room, expecting his wife or his eldest daughter to rush to his defense, to scream at the police and demand their departure as they had done so many times in the past. But Grandma remained seated on the floor, gently dabbing at Lily’s wound with the now blood-soaked towel, her face utterly expressionless. Aunt Clara crossed her arms defensively, looking away from her father’s pleading eyes. The illusion of absolute control had evaporated in less than three minutes.
Officer Davis moved in swiftly, clicking the cold steel handcuffs around Arthur’s thick wrists with practiced efficiency. The metallic snap echoed sharply against the kitchen tile, a sound that felt like the final breaking of a generational curse. Sarah watched the cuffs close with a slow, agonizing breath of relief. For years, she had carried the invisible scars of this very same discipline, and today, her daughter’s blood had finally drawn the line that could never be uncrossed.
