Chapter 2

The living room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence that felt heavier than physical weight. Officer Miller, a seasoned cop with kind eyes and graying temples, stepped further into the kitchen, his hand resting instinctively near his holster. His partner, a younger officer named Davis, immediately secured the perimeter, his eyes darting between the filming uncle, the bleeding child, and the tense adults. The blue cooler still sat innocently by the pantry, its open lid displaying the remaining cans of orange soda. Lily groaned softly beneath the white towel, the crimson stain growing larger by the second, a silent accusation against everyone present.

Arthur stood frozen, the heavy leather belt dangling uselessly from his hand like a dead snake. His face lost its angry flush, replaced by a pale, defensive mask of practiced innocence. He took a slow step backward, instinctively seeking refuge behind the silent approval of his wife, Grandma, who was still kneeling near the injured child.

“Now hold on just a minute, Officer,” Arthur said, his voice dropping into a smooth, practiced baritone that had cowed his children for decades. “There was no striking. The girl was acting out, running wild in the house, and she tripped over her own clumsy feet. It was a simple accident. Kids are clumsy. You know how they are.”

Sarah stepped forward, shielding the camera-wielding uncle behind her. Her blue jeans were stained with a smudge of dust from the floor, but her posture was rigid and unyielding. “He raised that belt to hit her, Officer. He threatened her, and she fell trying to escape his violence. My brother caught the whole thing on his phone. Every single second of it.”

Officer Miller glanced at the uncle holding the smartphone. The red recording light was still blinking steadily, a tiny digital eye recording the truth of the household. Miller stepped forward, extending an open palm. “Hand me the phone, sir. Let's take a look at what happened here before we jump to any conclusions.”

Arthur’s eyes flared with a desperate panic. He took half a step forward as if to intervene, but Officer Davis immediately stepped between them, his hand firmly blocking Arthur’s path. The subtle shift in power was instantaneous. For the first time in her life, Sarah saw the armor of fear surrounding her father begin to crack. The glowing screen of the phone would soon expose the decades of abuse that had been hidden behind closed doors, polite neighborhood barbecues, and the cheerful birthday banners hanging overhead.
