Chapter 13

The preliminary hearing in the county courthouse was less crowded than the arraignment, but the tension in the room was palpable. Arthur sat at the defense table in his orange jumpsuit, looking significantly older and more fragile than he had weeks prior. The swagger of absolute authority was completely gone, replaced by a bitter, resentful glare as he scanned the gallery.

Judge Thomas presided over the proceedings with her characteristic efficiency. The prosecutor presented the complete evidence package: the digital smartphone video, the medical reports detailing Lily’s concussion and head laceration, and Sarah’s formal deposition outlining the decades-long pattern of domestic intimidation.

Arthur’s new defense attorney attempted to argue that the charge of felony child abuse was overstated, claiming that a single instance of accidental injury during disciplinary correction did not rise to the level of a major felony. However, the argument fell completely flat in the face of the clear video evidence and the damning medical timeline.

When Sarah took the witness stand to testify, the courtroom fell into absolute silence. She wore a simple navy blue dress, her posture upright and confident. She looked directly at the prosecutor as she answered every question with steady, unshakeable honesty, describing the climate of fear in her childhood home and the horrifying reality of what happened the day the birthday banners fell.

When cross-examination time came, Arthur’s attorney asked Sarah if she wasn’t exaggerating her father’s past disciplinary methods out of personal spite.

Sarah turned her head slowly, looking past the attorney straight into her father’s eyes for the first time since his arrest. Arthur flinched slightly under her steady gaze.

“My father taught us that love was conditional and that obedience could only be bought with fear,” Sarah said, her voice ringing clear and strong across the courtroom. “He believed his house was a kingdom where he could do whatever he wanted without consequence. He was wrong. Today, my daughter is safe, and the truth is out in the open where it can never be hidden again.”

Judge Thomas listened intently, her expression hardening further. When Sarah stepped down from the stand, the judge wasted no time rendering her decision.

“Based on the overwhelming evidence of violent intimidation and resulting severe bodily harm, the court finds sufficient probable cause to bind the defendant over for trial on all felony counts,” Judge Thomas announced firmly, bringing her gavel down with absolute finality. “Trial is scheduled for the next criminal term. The defendant remains remanded without bail.”
